Trying to update my Asus Mobo bios , been having some trouble with the pc crashing and thought this might help, went to the site and turns out there has been 5 or 6 updates out since I got it.

My question is is it possible to update the bios via bootable cd as I dont have a floppy drive and probobly never will again !

Yes it is, use something like Ultimate Boot CD www.ultimatebootcd.com (http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/) and change the boot sequance in your BIOS to boot from your CD/DVD reader as first device. Put the new unzipped BIOS somewhere easy that you will remember on your hard drive like C:\"NewBIOS" and then use one of the BIOS tools on there to flash, UniFlash is very good and is as named a universal BIOS flash tool.

Any further questions just ask. :)

I think some sort of write protect is on , couldnt find anything to do with it in my bios though , woulc it possibly be a jumper on the mobo ? cant find the manual , will see what I can dig up on the asus site

I believe people wouldn't want to suggest a windows BIOS flash utility because first, even though all big names such as Abit and Asus have tools for you to flash in Windows, these tools don't work with all mobos (only the newer models support this feature) and secondly, BIOS flashing in DOS is always preferable (except for systems that don't have a floppy drive like yours :)).

For me, I still use the floppies for SATA and PATA RAID controllers, and sometimes for BIOS flashing.

I did know that but ......... I've seen too many boobies happen with both the MSI & Asus software to ever consider recommending them.

Like Van I too prefer to do it from DOS using a floppy disc, DrDos is excellent for this purpose I find. In fact if you wanted to you could also make a Windows version of Ultimate Boot CD using your Windows CD + Bart's PE Builder. The link for this is on the UBCD website if you are interested, it's a nice piece of work tbh. :)

For those faced with the similar dilemma in the future, you can
create a bootable Windows 2000/XP/2003 Disc with Nero 6 (http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=297) and add the required files or folders to the compilation prior to burning.

The required boot files can be downloaded from the link in the tutorial.

The resulting product would be a bootable CD with your BIOS flashing (or whatever) utilities already on the disc, ready for execution.
