Just bought an xbox recently and aquired a 3rd party xbox playback kit.

I can use the remote control to browse through the xbox menu, but when i place a DVD in the drive, i get the message "You need to plug in a dvd playback kit to play DVD's"

The xbox is unmodded and brand new

Remote is "X DVD REMOTE CONTROL X-604"

Any ideas?????

did it come with a dvd dongle? The dongle is the hardware that enables dvd playback, you'll have to get it or hack the box.

You would think it did, since he was able to browse through the menu with the remote or is that not possible?

This is the reason why I recommend sticking to the MS remote. Now if they would only put a power button on the damn thing. ;)

There are cheap IR mods that only send signal like the wireless contollers, so you could browse but it won't enable the dvd playback.

Good idea to wait. U might not need a remote if you mod your XBOX, as the DVD player might work with the controllers like my XBOX does.
