Have a dead maxtor 160gb and the board is dead (it wont power up) I rma'd the drive and recieved the new one. I switched boards (cause there the same) and it makes a beeping noise......anyone successfully do this? There is a ton pics my gf has on there and she is crying. The only difference I see in the board is one chip is by a different manufactorer....the original is a samsung, the other hynix, but the model # of the drive is the same...wtf?

Anything I could possibly do besides getting maxtor to retrieve the pics?

I've done the same thing before to resurrect a dead harddrive. That trick does work but only if everything is identical. The models # may be the same but obviously the drives are not...probable different revisions and firmware.
