I am looking to find out some information about the lmhost file.

What it does?
Where it's located?
And what ramifications it can have on a network?

I help maintain a xp/98/ 2003 server network

Any help would be appreciated.

LMHOST file is a file that resolves netbios names to IP addresses (you have to manually add entries though)

ON xp it is located in sytem32\drivers\etc

If you are having problems browsing due to name resolution it could improve the situation, as far as I know there shouldn't be any negative impacts from using one except that they will have to be updated manually on all pcs

Do you not have a wins server on your network?

I don't know if we do or we don't I've never bothered too look nor would i know where to look.

I went to the etc folder and had a look there was nothing but a sample file.

Thanks for the quick reply.

there is only a sample file as it is a legacy item it is only there to provide backward compatibility if you want to use one you need to create one or rename the sample file.
