View Full Version : backup advice/opinion.........
when I first backed up psx games it appeared pretty easy to do even those discs that were badly marked up, with a good bit of software, a good drive and decent media it would copy and play ok most of the time.
Now even though my experience of all things dvd are very limited at the moment I have backed up a few ps2 games but have had problems with those that are marked up, I cant seem to do them, so do I take it that marked dvd's are not so forgiving as the old black cdr discs.
I use Nero, ritek media and pioneer drive.

Well, the only thing I can tell ya is to either copy the contents to your hd and make an image or copy to dvd. If you cleaned them and still gives you errors then your dvd drive isnt very good, cause I have backed up some games that looked like they have been scrubbed with sandpaper.
Now this is the sort of feed back I wanted Mr Snatcher.
I did clean the discs up and either I couldnt make an image file to HDD, or if I did when I tried to play the backed up disc it wouldnt play.
You mentioned me drive, the Pioneer, its almost new, done a few games and movies, using good media by what I have heard on the forum, maybe its me software, is there a particular one you use and if so what settings or are they default.
Would be interested to know Mr Snatcher, please.

You got everything right. Ritek is good and pioneer is good. Are you able to copy the contents to the hd, then make an image. I take it your burner is the poineer, do you have a reader? What chip do you have? and how old is your ps2? I have a magic 3 chip and it sucked for 4 months, then all of a sudden it started to work flawlessly for the last 7 months.??? I'm confussed.
most of the time no my attempt to do a image fails with errors.
I have a Toshiba dvd-rom and Plextor 708A on one machine and a Pioneer 107 with Samsung dvd-rom.
Ps2 is about 4 months old with a Messiah chip, it seems ok with discs I can backup.
Right just tried something out, I creatred an image using me Toshiba, reader, and burnt using the Plex708A, guess what it worked. Now I am not sure if it was using the Toshiba or because I used Nero Burning ROM 5, I usually used Nero Express, me thinks it could be Express that was the problem. I will try other combinations later.
Mind you just tried to do it with Nero Burning Rom 6 with the Pioneer and I cant create an image file. Might load 5 and see what happens.
Any way thanks Mr Snatcher you were a great help, thanks.

Weird, DVDs actaully have a much better error correction system then CD-Rs, and from all I know (an my own testing for the past 3 years) DVD-Rs are much more stable and last much better than ANY CD-Rs I have ever used. I have been burning DVDs for over 3 years and I have only ever had 1 couldn't get to read (it came from someone else and I assume it was bad burn liek they burned at 4X on 1X media w/cracked firmware).
Anyway, try a CD/DVD doctor, they really do work, also I always use my Pioneer A03/106 and make an ISO/image of the disc if I am having problems. If you can't get it to do that then you're probably out of luck and will need another disc to copy from.

Rab what mod method are you using? (if soldered which chip)?
Thanks for your continued help people.
I had my ps2 done through someone on here, recommended, seems ok.
It was the Messiah chip, Im not too sure the ps2 is quite at fault.
It seems to me its a combination of my Pioneer 107 and Nero.
Me Plex seems to work OK with nero 5, with badly marked discs.
I tell you what I am so glad I brought this up because I would of just stayed clear of marked discs.
Mind you having said that its only the Plex that can handle them.
I cant remember the titles but it previously happened to about 3 I tried, until sussing the combination of Plex and Nero 5.
The only thing I find strange is that Pioneers are the best in the field of dvd's but mine dont seem to be, compared with the Plex, with respects of marked up discs.

I had the same problem with my pioneer 105 (i know i need to upgrade  ).
I found some of the originals my drive could not read at all. Even some DVD movies would not be recognized. However anything that was copied was read just fine. The weird thing is I didn't have any problems burning (using different software), I would simply use my brother's computer to rip the game then transfer it to burn on mine. Took a lot of time but it worked.
I ended up getting my laser cleaned and that solved everything, so i'm not sure if you got your problem fixed but you could try that.
