I have my pc hooked up to my home receiver via some custom wires I made, and all was well until I got cable internet.
Now I get this loud buzzing sound, like from a guitar amp. The only thing I can come up with is that there is some sort of interference from my cable modem.
have any of you heard of this happening before?

my guess is that you now have a ground loop between the cable and your electrical outlet. the electrical systems are out of phase. you could try either connecting a wire from the cable ground and your computer case and see if it quits. another way is to try a ground lift adapter (2 to 3 prong) on your computer power cable. even plugging into another outlet may help if it is in phase with the cable. remember that there are 2 phases coming into your house. some outlets are on delta phase 1 and some are on delta phase 2. you need to match your computer to the same phase the cable company is using or you will get a ground loop that can be up to 120 volts

well i took a wire and connected it to my pc power supply and wrapped it around the coaxil cable connector to act as a ground , and it reduced the buzz dramatically, althoguht you can still sorta hear it.
is this a good idea or should i try something else?
i am using a sugre protector on both my stereo and computer, but both surge protectors are not on the same wall outlet

The problem seem to be in you home made cables. You should opt for som ready made cables.
You may also try a ground loop isolator frequently used in car audio installation. I use one of those in a run between two audio receivers with multi-zone setup for just that purpose.

I agree with BlackDiamondJr, that it may be your cables.
If you dont want to use shop bought ones, try changing the cable to a heavier shielded coaxial cable and see if this helps.
