Anyone here own any divx standalone players? (dvd players that play divx)
If so, how is it? I'm currently looking to buy a divx player so I can play my animes that I download.
Any suggestions?
I've read up on a few (Pioneer, Panasonic, JVC, Philips..etc) but I can't seem to make up my mind.
Anyone have one that's working good for you?
Thanks

I have an AVI/MPEG4 player, which can play DivX, not that I think I have ever tried on as I use XviD. The company didn't pay DXN for certification though, so no mention of DivX.
One of the biggest factors is the chipset not the brand name, although I believe that Pioneer have done some nice things firmware wise with their MTK based player.

Celtic,
What's the difference with XviD & divx (besides the letters being backwards??)? (By the way, this is a serious question, not being sarcastic)
Hm..So I should look for a chipset ..with something about MTK?
Like the Rj Tech 800?

XviD is opensource and free. DivX is not. XviD is better and supports more features, some of which standalones can't handle as as far as I am aware no standalone is fully ASP compliant. That said DivX and XviD are both ASP MPEG4 ISO video codecs and should be basically interchangable. ie. there really shouldn't be any difference between XviD or DivX in mp4 (official mpeg4 container). When it comes to avi though you have different fourCC codes (DX50 for DivX 5.x and XVID for XviD) although most players handle both fourCC's fine there is at least one player that doesn't handle XVID and I think that you will find that there is a lot more XviD stuff floating around than DivX.
I would say that MTK had the best chipsets, however there is a new generation of chipsets coming out. Also not all MTK chipsets are the same.

Don't you have an XBOX? (I could be mistaken)

No. Only a PS2

Sorry about that, my mistake. A modded XBOX with XBMC is far superior to any standalone DVD Player you could buy. Take a look at www.xboxmediacenter.com (http://www.xboxmediacenter.com) and go into the info section it will tell you everything the latest version can do. :D

Jesterrace is right, I have a LG Divx player that also plays some Xvids, butI can honestly say that it does not compare to the play back I get from My Modded Xbox with XBMC running on it.
You also need to take into consideration whether or not it can be updated for latest Divx Codecs coz if not when a new codec is released it might not work with your player.
thanks

Any other quesstion mate feel free to ask

ASP MPEG4 is ASP MPEG4, doesn't matter how many times you update a codec. Not that any current players fully support ASP which is why only some XviD files work.
As far as I know DivX 6 is still ASP MPEG4, they are just hacking avi to add menu's and stuff. At least I think that I read that somewhere.

I'm gonna go out and buy the Pioneer 575A today :)
Seems to be very highly regarded
Will reluctantly wave bye bye to my Sony 7700 after 6 years :(

got a crystal DivX player, £40 from www.aria.co.uk
plays xvid & divx
only problem I've found is that it plays DVD's OK but if you have a widescreen DivX (which all mine are) then it puts it in letterbox format instead of filling my widescreen TV

Sounds like it is using an ESS chipset. Common problem with them as I understand it. Also means no qpel support although I hear that they can handle DivX's 1 warp point GMC.

the ps2 media player is sufficient. plays xvid and divx from cdr and dvdr. It can get a bit jerky but with subititle support as well you cant lose!

If you already have a modded PS2, then I agree that the PS2 Reality Media Player would be a smart option as it will play anything that those $50-$60 standalone players will. However if you don't have a modded (or some sort of mod method) PS2, then a modded XBOX is still the way to go for the most versatility. Take a look at http://www.xboxmediacenter.com/info_project.htm and take a look at everything the V1.1 release supports. Even the $500-$600 standalone units can't compete with a modded XBOX that is running an up to date version of XBMC. The other HUGE advantage you get with a modded XBOX is that unlike a standalone unit, XBMC is always being updated. This means that if there is a particular obscure file extension that isn't supported, all you have to do is wait for a few weeks and there will be an update released that will probably support it. The developers on this program are really going all out to ensure that XBMC supports as many file extensions as possible. The latest version even supports quicktime and real media player file extensions. I wouldn't say it is 100% in these departments yet but they are definitely working on it. As far as Xvid/divx, VCD, SVCD and all the other major file formats, this sucker plays everything.

I've downloaded a copy of the PS2 media player, but how the hell do I burn it? I read the docs, and it says that I need to burn SYSTEM.CNF at LBA 12231 etc etc.. how the hell do I do that? Couldn't someone just email an ISO or a Nero image of a CD with it already burnt if its as complicated as it sounds?

I know it's weird. Some sites have it set up as a bin file and all you need to do is burn the .bin file to CD-R/DVD-R with Alcohol 120% and it will work perfectly. That's how mine was. I found it via a google search and it was on a german site.

What about this piece of kit off ebuyer:
http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=78287&_LOC=UK
Would that have any potential advantages over an XBox?

See no mention of the chipset used. Someone should open one up and find out.
Just bought a Sony DVP-NS955V which plays divx. Only tried it on one so far but I coded it wrong (letterboxed instead of widescreen!) Will perhaps try one over the weekend so can report back if anyone is interested.
