Where Did I Go?

Hi all
Me again Elaine :)
I posted a couple of weeks ago, regarding having troble networking PC.
Right, on the same network, I'm trying to netowork the laptop. It used to be fine on the old network, but this time its not working so well.
In reverse to last time's problems, I can have access to all the files\printers ect, however I cnt get online.
I've disabled the firewall completely, I've typed in the IP address, (must be right cos can access network drives).
When I try and load the net I just get the windows "Cannot fine page.." error. Not really sure what to do. As I say the laptop is running win 98, with PCMCI network card.
Since the net didn't work, I've tried running the internet connection wizard, and selecting the "connect via LAN" option.
Appreciate any assistance :)
Thanks :)
Whats your setup? Are you using a router?
If so, are other computers on your network able to get to the internet?
Are you using DHCP?

Thats got my network details on, as had some other problem the other day :)
Basically I'm just using a switcher, so leave my main machine on for all others to access net through.
Currently got 3 PC's on there (one being the server), just trying to get the lappy on, like before.
Cheers :)

So when you say "switcher", I take it that you're referring to a hub and not a router? Especially since you need to leave the host computer on to get internet access.

yes, sorry, using a hub, and not a router :)

The problem is that you're going to need to use a router instead of a hub unless you purchase another additional IP address from your ISP.

Oh :(
How come I will have to do that, I don't undestand. Reason I ask is because I previously had the same setup, just with a different machine as a host. However, the network was setup using the windows wizard. Now it has been doen just by manually imputting the IP addresses. Is it just because its in 98. I mean it used to work with 98, how come not any more
Sorry to sound dumb...

You previously only had two computers, and now you have three including the laptop, correct?

Nope, previously had 3 pc's and 2 laptop's all off the same connection
Now have 3 pc's and 1 laptop...

I'm starting to become a bit confused. :o
Please give the exact model of the "switcher", and the OS you have on the "server". Otherwise we could be going in circles for ages.

Theres a number of ways to resolve this problem
You can either buy a router for a few quid, can pick ones up on ebay for £5 these days and run it through there
OR
Connect your internet connection directly to one machine install another network card in it, plug that it and share the connection.
Personally the router option is much better as you have greater control over your network with some form of security as well.

As this member already had several computers all with internet access in the past, I'll reserve my advice until they post back.

Hi all,
Firstly thanks for your time, and sorry for all the confusion.
Right, hope this makes sense, will try and explain: -
Old Setup: -
2 PC's with Win XP (one of which was the server)
1 PC with Win 95
1 Lappy with Win 98
All setup using a wired hope network. The switcher\hub I used is a Netgear FS105. (5 Port Fast Ethernet Switch).
This network was setup using the inbuilt windows networking wizard.
New Setup: -
3 PC's with XP (one of which hosts net)
1 Laptop with Win 98
All setup using a wired hope network. The switcher\hub I used is a Netgear FS105. (5 Port Fast Ethernet Switch).
I couldn't get this to work using the windows wizard, so had to manually imput the id address for each machine. This has worked for the 3 PC's, but the laptop only has access to the home network (hdd and printers), and no net access.
I've disabled the firewall on the lappy, doesn't work, and on the server machine, I went to add the ip of the lappy into norton, and it says its already got that ip in its range, so shouldn't be blocking it.
This is all off the same connection I had previously...
Hope this clears things up.
Would I really need to buy a router, as I am now running fewer machines that before, surely its just something in the setup... (also, using a router, would it work on my line, as I am using Pipex, so I need to enter a username and passwork to connect)
Once again, thanks for your time, and appreciate any further assistance :)

Thanks, it makes sense now. :) You don't need to purchase a router, but the way you have it set up now can cause a lot of little problems such as the one you're having now.
Click Start, and then click Run. In the Open box, type: winipcfg
Click OK.
Check that the laptop's IP address is still what you set it to.
Check the default gateway IP. Is it 192.168.0.1? Is the subnet mask still 255.255.255.0?

Hi again, right,
I've just completely re-done the network on the laptop. I removed it all, and reinstalled it, but I've ended up in the same situation, network access, but no net access.
I've used the command above (winipcfg), and it shows the settings that I've entered.
I've configured the firewall on it to all the network acces. I've also tried running it with the firewall disabled. I've also been onto the internet host PC and checked the lappy's ip, which is fine.
So......... what d'ya reckon? :(
