InterVideo DVD Copy 2 DVD backup Guide

With the release of version 2 of DVD Copy InterVideo have really done themselves proud in my opinion. The quality is markedly improved from v1.2 and it is now even quicker too. You have some great options with this software inc Movie-Only (with menus I might add!), Full Disc and custom.

So is it better than the other contenders? Well as there’s a FREE demo available for download that’s a question you should answer yourself and by following this straightforward tutorial it won’t take you long to find out either.

Tools Required

InterVideo DVD Copy 2 (http://www.intervideo.com/jsp/InterVideoDVDCopyPlatinum_Profile.jsp/)

DVD Decrypter (http://www.dvddecrypter.com/)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Rip

OK after you have installed all the above programmes you will need to first rip the files from your DVD to your hard drive and because DVD Copy 2 (like most DVD transcode software) cannot read CSS encrypted discs this needs to be done with DVD Decrypter before doing anything else.

Then click on Edit -> Select All to select all the files on the DVD.

Select a destination folder on your hard drive where you want the ripped files to go and click on the Decrypt button to start the rip process

Now the rip process has been completed we are ready to transcode & reduce the size of the movie using DVD Copy 2 so we can get it onto a 4.7GB DVDR disc.

Transcode with DVD Copy 2

Start up DVD Copy and the first thing you will notice is that it has a very simple interface and to be honest there's not much that can go wrong here when backing up a DVD. Keep all settings as default and to the side of Source click on Browse

Now select and open the Folder where you have placed the ripped files. In this case I place my files in RIPS

Now we need to decide what type of backup we want. In this case I want a Full-Disk backup but also would like a few custom changes made too. So hit the Customize button and you will find a new panel pops up on the RHS of the Gui

Now here we have a really nice touch to the software that is a vast improvement on the likes of say Instant Copy for usability. You have a nice little viewer now where you can view each cell of the movie! So you can edit out exactly what you want and know exactly what you are deleting too.

OK from using the viewer I have established on this particular movie that T03 only contains the film studio logo intro so I will uncheck that box as I don't really want that on the finished backup. Again using the viewer I've also established that T02 only contains the movie trailer in both cells therin and as I don't want that I can also uncheck that box too. Right I'm happy with what I have left from all my editing there so now it's time to look at my Audio and Video source options in the main Gui.

http://www.uploadit.org/BaconBap/Language_Select_4.png

Now clicking on the dropdown menu for Audio source I can see ALL languages that are on the film. I only want English language here so that is what I select.

Now here's a funny thing on this particular film, the Video source box has no dropdown menu which is not that unusual for there not to be a choice but it is incorrectly showing this particular film to be in 4:3 format which I know is wrong because I've just watched it on my widescreen TV and know for a fact that it is a 16:9 movie. So maybe watch out for this when using the program in future, nothing to really worry about so long as you know what the input is. Now to the Subtitle Source box. I don't want any on my backup so I'll set that to None as shown in the pic below.

Right now we have made all but one of our settings before moving onto the next stage. It's choice time, do you want to save the files to your Hard Drive and burn later using the burn software of your choice or do you want to let DVD Copy burn it for you now? In this case we will let the software do the work for us and therefore select our DVD writer as the Target as shown below.

http://www.uploadit.org/BaconBap/burn_source_6.png

We are now ready to burn so insert a blank DVDR/W disc and hit the burn button!

http://www.uploadit.org/BaconBap/burn_button_7.png

Now we can sit back and relax, enjoying a beverage of choice while DVD Copy firstly transcodes/shrinks the video files to a temp folder

http://www.uploadit.org/BaconBap/file_process_8.png

And once that has been completed DVD Copy then burns the transcoded files to your blank DVDR/W disc.

As we are using a 2X DVD-RW disc this will take aprox 1/2 an hour so time to sit back and relax with a cold

1/2 an hour later out pops our finished movie! Remove the disc and test the playback of it in your standalone DVD player forwarding through the chapters to make sure all is fine. And there we are that is it, all done! Dead easy right? ;)

(Just to give you an idea of how long it all takes, using a 2600+ with 512mb DDR RAM it took me 10 mins to rip, 20 mins to transcode which is very, very good considering that the DVD I used was almost 8GB before transcoding.)
