I’m going to get a Stand alone DVD-Recorder very soon. I’ve done a bit of reading around and been put of lite-on’s, due to jerky picture reporting.

I’m more than happy to do all the editing needed on my PC, all I want is a machine to tape the programmes (from NTL) which I can then edit on the PC.

I’d really like a hard drive machine with a RJ-45 as I could network it to the PC, but a machine like this doesn’t seem to exist!

Tempted by the PANASONIC DMRE55EBS, just need to know if a PC DVD-Drive can read DVD-RAM disks?

Most DVD RAM drives will read DVD disks, but DVD-ROM drives won't read DVD RAM, I think the cartridge is optical, my system has a Matshita DVD RAM Super multi drive although I have not used RAM yet, you will need a pc DVD RAM drive

i think some liteon dvdrom drives read dvdram the older ones not the newest one and maybe look at some of the companies that produce dvd ram recordable pc drives (like lg panasonic toshiba etc)they would probably have some dvdrom drives capable of reading dvdram

ps like cougar says you wont get any capable of reading cartridge dvdram disks, but i think you can remove the disk from the cartridge, but you'll need to check that out for yourself

Yes thats absolutely right, you can remove some single layer DVD-RAM from their cartridges, and the majority of current DVD-ROM drives can read DVD-RAM. Also of course, your Panasonic can record DVD-R which makes all this a little redundant.

As VS says ........ the E55 writes to DVD-R's also, so DVD-RAM's are not essential for what you want, unless you are worried about rewritables.

My carts say you can't take the disk out. So what? I been using the same cart about 6 times a day for almost 2 years :-)
