ORIGINALLY POSTED BY HOSS (dead links to be removed soon)

As we are getting very busy and end up typing the same thing many times I'm creating this little post for all of us to bookmark and refer to.

If you are having trouble with your CDRW and a member as sent you here follow these steps...[list=1]
Please give us all the info you can. CDRW Model# and Make. Software Name and Version Number. Etc....
Answer a few simple questions.....
A) Is this a new problem or has the CDRW performed well in the past?
B) What were you trying to create or burn when this happens?
Data, Audio, Game, What?
C) How are your drives configured?
What is on Primary Master/Slave, Secondary Master/Slave?
D) The more info you give us, the better we are able to help!
Check your ASPI layer it should be v4.60 (1021) Go here and D/L ASPI Check and run it. http://www.cyrus.troy.btinternet.co.uk/downloads.htm (http://www.cyrus.troy.btinternet.co.uk/downloads.htm)
While your are there also D/L Force ASPI.
If your ASPI is out of date use this utility to update it. Just run the Dumpaspi.bat file followed by the Instaspi.bat file.
For Installing ASPI in WinXP you may need to follow these steps instead of using ForceASPI
Installing ASPI in WinXP (http://www.cdrom-guide.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=5769)
Go to Device Manager (which is in Control Panel/System) Under Properties for the drive.
Check these things.
*Note These instructions apply to Win98/95 Win2k & XP are different
A) Is DMA enabled?
B) Is Sync Data Transfer enabled?
C) What Firmware version are you running?
D) Is Disconnect Enabled?
E) IS AIN Disabled? [Auto Insert Notification]

*DMA should be enabled, if not toggle it on for ALL Drives. Including your Hard Drives, unless it gives you problems it will make a huge difference. You can always Disable it later if it causes any problems.
*Sync Data Disabled.
*Disconnect Enabled
*AIN Disabled [this is a good idea as it can cause conflicts]

Also have a look at your BusMaster Drivers are they VIA or Microsoft/Intel?
Info is under Hard Disc Controller/Properties in Device Manager.
If they are VIA's 4 in 1 BusMaster Drivers try updating them to the newest version. http://www.viaarena.com/?PageID=2 (http://www.viaarena.com/?PageID=2)
If your now using XP find the DMA & Autoplay/AIN info here in the Burning Section WinXP FAQ (http://www.cdrom-guide.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=6839)
Certain VXD's can, and will also cause conflicts. These listed below are unneeded by most all apps and drives.
So rename them as follows.
The files are located in the Windows\System\IoSubSys folder...Do Not Delete Them!
Instead Rename them to .vx_ that way should they be needed you just name them back to .vxd These are the 4 so far.
Also beware, should you reinstall Windows you will need to do this again!

Atapchng.vxd
Necatapi.vxd
Scsi1hlp.vxd [this one causes the most problems]
Torisan3.vxd
If you are using EZ-CD Creator make sure it is updated to the latest version
EZCD Updates Page (http://www.roxio.com/en/support/ecdc/ecdcupdates.html)

B) Also there is a known problem with EZCD and MS Media Player 7
If you have recently installed v7 and you are now having trouble burning?
Simply uninstall the Adaptec EZCD Plug-in part from Media Player 7 by running the install again and deselecting that option.
If you are using Nero along with a DirectCD [EZCD's default Packet Writing app] version prior to v5.0 you should read this and follow the directions
Nero vs. DirectCD v3.x How to make them get along (http://www.cdrom-guide.com/ubb/Archives/Archive-000011/HTML/20020204-7-011973.html)
