My bro has just bought a Bose hifi.. not sure what model it is, but its just a small thing with a CD player and (I think) a radio, a sub woofer, and two speakers which are just like two small cubes together for each speaker.

I was listening to it at his at the weekend, and it really does sound like something else.

I'm now thinking about getting a semi decent hifi, and if possible a 5.1 (or better) surround system all in one, cos I don't really see the point in having a separate hi fi and surround sound system in the same room.

How are Bose against the competition?

My bro has spent £800 I think on his hifi from an outlet.. what kind of money do I need to be spending to get a similar quality of sound, but with the home cinema features?

Short answer is "How much do you want to spend?" ;)

Decent AV Amp, good 5.1 speaker package and nice CD/DVD player will cover music and Home Cinema needs. Sub/Sat speaker package if you want the setup to be discreet or floorstanders if you don't mind them dominating.

Most audiophiles seem to scoff at Bose because they are overpriced for what you actually get...a case of style over substance.

All depends on what you really want and how much you are willing to chuck at it

I have the Bose 5.1 system installed for the past year+, I have absolutely no regrets whatsoever. Without exception, everyone who comes to the house comments on the sound from this system. Thing is, the speakers are nice and small and I have them attached to the beams on the ceiling that they are almost undetectable. There are others slightly less expensive I must admit, but a close friend is now buying the system they have on special offer at the moment - the media center with dvd player, two speakers and a woofer box. The surround sound effect from this is amazing even tho there are no rear speakers. Whoops - I guess I'm impressed with Bose.

It was a Christmas special they were doing at the Bose Outlet store at Bicester Village, the speakers, woofer etc with an Onkyo Amplifier which was a factory refurbished system, but inside the box it was all brand new and I think I paid around £500 for it which was a bargain not to be missed. I have been to the Bicester Village recently and they do have an older model than the current one on special offer - maybe worth giving them a ring to find out what the offer is - I think the speaker system was around £350.

Listen to Plonky. Audiophiles hate BLOSE. They sometimes sound ok but they are waayyy overpriced. Their marketing budget is huge and their prices are high to make up for it. If you want good affordable speaks, look into Polk or Boston Acustics. Onkyo and Yamaha make some good affordable HT recievers.

Bose has never published the specifications of its speakers because it has things to hide. You can find a very interesting "review" of a Bose speaker system HERE (http://www.intellexual.net/bose.html).

bose is supposed to be the best of the best
A self-styled title from one of its brochures probably!
