right here we go, i've got a new burner its a nec 1300a, read loads of reviews about it and it seemed ok, i'm running nero 5.5 and my pc is amd1600+ 256ram. when i try burning a dvd using princo's they just end up as coasters, so i tried using philips dvdrw and it still wont play, i'm trying to copy a movie with it and it's a copy so protection is not a prob. any ideas plz

I would lose the Princos and try some Riteks.
Also make sure that your standalone can play dvdr's/rw's ... not all can.

Have you checked to make sure your drives were configured properly? (ie Master, Slave).

Very simple way to copy a copy is with DVD Decrypter (freeware). Get yourself some decent discs (riteks as Phil says above) put the film you want to copy into your dvd drive open up dvd decrypter, select ISO read mode, save the image to your hdd. After image is complete select ISO write mode, point the program to your created image file, stick a blank in your burner and press write.
15 mins later a copied copy :)

Don't use Princos & how do you know your player reads dvdrws?

here's how it is, well i've still not got the burner sorted out, i took it to pc world and told them that it would burn cds but would not copy dvds to dvds, i know about the retail films being bigger but the ones i was trying to copy were themselves copies, if i copy a dvd from my dvdrom to my dvd burner it says in the nero error print out that it was "key_hardware_failure"
if i copy a dvd from my burner to my burner no matter which dvd i put in it when it comes to create the image or whatever you call it on the hard drive, it comes up with "media_error", i've tried 4 dvds so i don't think its that.
so tomorrow i've got to take it to dixons who hopefully will replace it with a different model.
i tried to burn an image but it gets so far through then says media error, i've tried princos =crap and illegal media, tdk = error, philips = error, infinity = error and memorex = error. i had a look in my bios to see the master and slave thing but there was no sign of it under the ide drives. thanx anyways.

If you are taking the drive back, you would be well advised to grab a refund and spend a little extra on the Pioneer 107 (£79.98 @ SVP).
The 1300a has always been a picky drive and is a bit out of date now. Many folk only got this working properly after flashing the firmware.
Also the disks you have been trying are all cheapos. Whatever you decide with the drive, it's vital to use good media, especially for movies. Riteks are not expensive now .... again @ SVP you can get 25 for £13.50.
