Hope no one minds, did post a thread under, mod chip help/installation, but I guess everyones getting busy for Christmas.

Any way if someone can help just by a little feed back please.
I want to install a mod chip, read a few tutorials, but not sure what one to go for, 2.6 or 3 xecuter.

Has the v3.0 been out long enough to be reasonably tested and would I be right in assuming it does more than the 2.6, I suppose in other words is it alot better.

It appears by what I read, so far that the 2.6 can be fitted solderless, more or less, but believe the v3 has to be soldered.

Its just I need to order one soon and not even sure of any good suppliers, if anyone knows any.

Sorry if its thought I have posted in the wrong place, maybe even asked too much its just I need to get this sorted, sorry for my impatience.

Cheers

X3 is overkill for the majority of users. I have one in mine but at the end of the day it's just show. What we all want is to be able to play backups (of our legally owned games :-) ) and if the urge arises add a larger HD and maybe an app or 2 like WMC etc right? Well the good news is all modern chip will allow this so I'd say go for whatever you're comfortable with fitting, if you have a 1.6 box and want to be 100% solderless the only option at this time is the spider chip. Team Xecuter have a mew solderless add-on in the pipeline for the 1.6 I believe but who knows when that will ship?. The Xapter for 2.3/2.6 (and maybe X3 please check, don't take me at face value) modchips is a doddle to fit if you have a <1.6 Xbox i.e 1.0 to 1.5. Really a kid could fit it. As long as you get a fibreglass pan and clean the coating off of the d0 point it works a charm. X3 is a superb option, as it allows flashing via Internet Explorer etc, this is a very nice feature, but at the end of the day, everything else is just icing. The X3_1959 bios is stable now even on my 1.6b so, thats O.K, don't forget though you can actually load other bios onto the X3 such as m8 etc, and these work just as well, you just don't get all the related tools with them.
In essense, unless you're a show off (like me) go for 2.6 and if you must have a solderless chip RIGHT NOW and have a 1.6 Xbox then it's going to have to be the spiderchip.

Thanks danman, have finally decided to go for xecuter 3, have seen the solderless adapter, "xapt3r" and I belive its out now although I cant find it anywhere in the uk for sale, at the moment, probably will see it once I have ordered chip, arh well such is life, so going to do it without it, I know someone good with a soldering iron.
Going to have to swat up on write ups though on how to set it up etc, once installed.

Heres a little warning on the X3. I just installed one in a 1.6 xbox. The install is perfect but I get a black screen. There is a bug in the flash bios version on the chip that causes this. You will have to install the chip in an xbox 1.0 -1.5 and flash it then install it in a 1.6.

Of course this only affect the 1.6 owners. if you have an older xbox then don't worry about anything I just said.

that must be old stock m8, all the ones I've seen lately have dual cromwell, 3.01 and 3.03 i think, might be 3.00 and 3.03 but anyway 1.6 not an issue with recent stock :-)

I concur with what has been said above. Unless you absolutely need to have every single feature in the book, then just get the V2.6. Hell, I have an old X2 Lite, and it runs backups, slayer's evox, an upgraded HD, XBMC, ect. all without a hitch. ;)

thanks all for your input, i had already ordered x3 and it arrived a few days ago.
my other half is quite capable with an iron and it was installed the other day.
having said that and I respect your views on the simplicity of the v2.6, but I had already installed the x3 and I appear to be having a small spot of bother.
The basic front switch has been installed, with the switch on the chip board set to off.
All the various coloured light modes seem to function correctly pushing the 2 buttons in sequence as stated in the tutorials.
My problem is I cant seem to burn a successful flash disc.
I have used Nero, as mentioned in tutorials, I have used cdr's and dvd-r's: cdr's are not recognised at all and the dvd-r's are recognised but does not see the files I burnt to it.
I had front panel switch, protect, set to off, 1 & 2 on and 3 & 4 off, I have a new Samsung dvd drive and dont know why I cant burn a successful flash bios disc.
I am going over the tutorials again to see if I am going wrong or if theres another way I can do it.
I used flashbios 303, should I maybe use 301.
Something I am not sure about should the drive I mentioned above be able to read cdr discs, say with music on it, as a standard xbox?
Its frustrating as everything seems ok just cant get this disc sorted.

sorry for being sooo dippy, but in the tutorials it shows pictures of the 3 modes/colours of switching, should I be attempting to flash it in the purple state, as I have been trying in the blue, enabled mode.
I wasnt sure if the purple, "256k backup" was like a default setting, is the one you alter?
I wont attempt it until I hear from you knowledgable people.

I appear to have flashed it now just have to load a dashboard.
I wasnt as successful as I first thought.
I appear to flash bios, but understand once done the xbox shuts down, as it does and when rebooted should come up with a title screen but mine doesnt it goes back to flash bios screen.
I have used dummy file with bios file 3.03, even enlarged dummy file.
Also used bios manager with dummy file dont know why I dont get screen come up after its completed when I reboot.
I flick dip switches on, on, off, off, off, flash, reset dip switches but dont get the screen in the tutorial. Im stuck, help please.
Cheers
