Linking with a mate over Broadband

I had read one of the other posts about sharing over broadband, but I dont really fancy the p2p route...is there something else like Laplink or similar that allows just me and a mate to link over broadband....just not too happy about opening my hardddrive to the rest of the world....oh yes....I'm a bit of a newie if its networking etc.

What do you mean by linking? What do you plan on doing? Sharing files? Playing games?

If you want to share/download files, most P2P programs use indirect linking to your files (by using secondary connections to the internet), so technically, the people can't just go around and browse everything you have in your HD, just in the folder you set it to (think of it as an FTP where you have access to one folder, and all the others are locked and hidden).
