after using a04's for ages, i have decided to go for something faster. Its it a good idea to continue with pioneer (ao7?) or ar the cheaper drives worthwhile? if so, can anyone recommend a good cheap reliable x8 (at dvdr "-" speed) drive available in the U.K.
thanks.

Stick with Pioneer m8 ... the support and firmware will be much easier to get hold of.
They are almost as cheap now anyway £79.98 at SVP now.

I certainly don't. Definitely go with the Pioneer 107. With the new firmware option (burns at 8x to just about any 4x DVD-R media) and with the amount of support and media flexibility you can get for them, it just doesn't make sense to go with another writer.

Might be worth a read:

Stateside the NEC's are about 2/3 the cost of the Pioneer's.

Where are you shopping. Unless you are talking about one of those weird rebate deals, the Pioneer 107 can be had for only about $30 more. IMHO The fact that Pioneers are much better matched to Ritek DVD-R and the option to burn 4x DVD-R at 8x is well worth the extra $30. ;)
