I need to go straight from a tape to cd-r in audio format....what do I need software and hardware....many many thanks for anyone who can help me out here...also please in laymans terms if ya can:)

You need a tape player, a phono to 3.5mm speaker jack cable and a computer. Plug the cable into the line in on your soundcard, and record. I use Audio record wizard, it's really simple to use.

any tips on some software to clean it up a little? it will be a mates gig I am recording to cd-r so coming straight from the mixing desk...

I have done this in the past... I used a prog called "DART XP Pro" or something to clean it up a bit (i.e. remove some of the background hiss on poor tapes). I've heard Soundforge can do this also.

Audacity is a nice wave editor that has some good filters for cleaning up the audio, and it's free

Just be aware that you'll need a good soundcard to get decent results -- cheaper boards, and especially in-built adapters can be hopeless, and introduce loud interference etc.
If you have a digital recorder (standalone DVD recorder, minidisc deck plus sound card with digital input etc) you'll probably get better results that way.
