View Full Version : Not sure what chip to install...........
Havent been inside xbox yet, but will have to to install new dvd drive, but it appears I have a 2002 v1.0 xbox.
I believe I could install either 2.6 or 3.0 xecuter chip but am unsure what one to choose.
I realise there is about £10.00 difference, but I am unsure how long 3.0 chip has been out and whether its been proved to be ok.
I dont understand all the tech info on the chips but I guess the latest chip 3.0 would be the best, possibly due to being able to do more.
Any way a little pointer in the right direction from anyone who has already experienced these chips would be helpful, so I can place an order.

Depends on what you want it to do. The x3 and smartxx chips are more development tools IMO, since they can do so much with different bios banks. If you all you want is a modded xbox for home and not really into development I would go for the x2.6.
Right got xecuter 3 chip, been installed and tests seem to prove it was installed properly.
Spent days going over what to do next not really quite understanding it if I am to be honest.
What little I did absorb I managed to get a flashbios file (I cant remember what it was at the time).
I made the file bigger with bios mgr 2.3 (1mb), I then created a dummy file (50mb), burnt them to cdrw.
I now get a screen come upwith some of the following- xbox linux clean bios 1.8, at the bottom of the screen it has some icons, 2 shadowed hdd's a cd and a chip, it briefly flashes between cd and chip and then settles on cd, looking for data.
it has what I believe to be a creation date of Jan 21 2003; So straight away I believe I have installed an old bios, in other words I could do better, how do I do this.
I was hoping I could remove the old one I installed and install a newer one, but how, I cant seem to manage it.
Can I do it through booting up in backup mode, with switches on, on, off, off, off, I wasnt sure if this would mess things up, would it actually over write the first installed bios, in the first 2 banks?
As you can see I am a learner, I have read many posts, reports and tutorials but I just aint picking it up.
I have a version 1.0 xbox, with samsung dvd drive, standard 8+GB hdd and the xecuter 3 chip installed with basic switch mounted on front.
I am visiting various places later to pick up what I need but would like to sort the bios issue out first so I can get on sorting a dashboard out. I will be wanting to load by disc.
Can anyone help please so I may get this sorted, I just want to get it done and out the way before christmas, I hope!!!
Any help would be appreciated especially if it is in simple layman's terms.
Thanks

try flashing through http(network from your pc). http://www.teamxecuter.com/flashbios/http.htm
tackle one problem at a time, feel free to ask.
networking is not hard, and IMO is essential to xbox modding. so if you need help with the network just let me know.
thanks for trying to help me out pepsik, you may have your work cut out with trying to help me though, I just hope I dont annoy you.
whats my best route to getting the right screen/menu up to allow me to select network flashing.
as I already have flashed once, which I dont want, I want better.

I think you flashed a cromwell(linux) bios on to the chip. Your going to have to make a bios cd on rw media to reflash the chip with flashbios.
Download flashbios v 3.03 and name it BIOS.bin (cap sensitive)
Make a dummy file, get any large file(over 50mb if you can) and name it dummy.dat
then burn the disc. Insert the disc in your xbox, reboot and the flash should take, after you get flashbios on the chip, it should be easier to update your chip.HTH
sorry pepsik back again, done what you said, but get linux screen, nothing has altered unable to change or reset present loaded bios.
Having said that I left the switches as on, on, off, off, off, it could not read disc.
It stated- loading linuxboot.cfg from cdrom. unable to find it.
Something I mentioned earlier, the third switch mode, (power/eject) 256k backup, lights up purple, could I do it from here, with the switches set as mentioned above and do it or would I be altering the 256k backup.
Would slayers auto installer solve my problem do you know or would this still not be read/recognised.

I'll have to send you linuxboot.cfg
drop me an email and I'll get you the file as soon as I get home. Same process as above except you also add the linuxboot.cfg file along with the dummy.dat and the BIOs.bin.
