Basically wanting to get some 5.1 speakers for my Telly which is coming soon. My gf is going to be getting the speakers so we wanted to make sure before we bought speakers.

Now we are unsure about the difference between TV and PC speakers because the speakers I really like the look of are these ones

http://www.pixmania.co.uk/uk/uk/364...0.html?srcid=36 (http://www.pixmania.co.uk/uk/uk/36460/art/logitech/speakers_z_680.html?srcid=36)

Logitech Z 680's but I now have a slight feeling they are only made for PC's?

So am i being really stupid and these are only made for pc? and if so does anyone know where i might find somewhere to get speakers for my TV?

just don't really wanna fork out 200 notes to find out that they only work with my pc http://www.bst-secure.com/forums/images/smilies/wink.gif

now the telly is here

http://www.dixons.co.uk/martprd/store/dix_page.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@2054361102.110176222 0@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccecadddekgjifgcflgceggdhhmdgmi.0&page=Product&sku=567605&category_oid=-21626&fm=2&sm=1&tm=undefined

and the model is

Model - Samsung WS28M064N
28" Pure Flat Widescreen

So will this telly be able to accept the speakers or will i need to find some different ones cause I'm abit confused :(

any help would be really appreciated on this

Thanks

Henry

Lo m8, the TV wont directly take any 5.1 speakers u will need some for of amp to decode the sound to 5.1. For the price u are lookin at payin for them speakers (Which i wouldnt recommend for the TV) u could get a AV package (Inclusive of 5 sat speakers and 1 subwoofer and a dvd player/Decoder) maybe u would have to add a little more £100ish. there are some ok ones around at the min for ur price range. try a few of these to give u some idea , if u need anymore help just ask.

Crossy

These are just examples to give u a idea, u can check around diff sites Richersounds etc. All these would pretty much outperform the speaker package u are looking at buying.

Hey m8 i'm unsure of what you mean by AV?

I have the following setup,

The Samsung TV, which will be delivered on Saturday so pretty much going for that one so thats done.

Now i have an XBOX and also a DVD player which has a decoder built into i guess? (its a yamada DVD player bought from SVP).

So i'm unsure about what you mean by a decoder, surely the decoder is the DVD player and that you could just plug the speakers into the DVD player, but what i wanna know is about how you can get say the xbox with 5.1 surround sound on it because games like Halo 2 are THX certified which would be very kewl to use with the speakers.

So hopefully you can explain to me abit more about it :) its just i thought you would just plug the speakers into the dvd player?

If your DVD player has built-in Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS decoders, it should have analog audio outputs for the 5.1 channels at the back (besides the coax/optical digital outputs) and your TV also needs to have 5.1 analog audio inputs to accept the analog outputs from the DVD player. And unless your TV has built-in amplifiers for the 5.1 channels or unless you are using powered speakers for all channels, you'll need an Audio/Video (A/V) receiver/amplifier+preamplifier with Dolby Digital 5.1/DTS decoder(s) and speakers as Crossy said to get the 5.1 sound.

Let me explain it a little bit more. You can't just plug speakers into the DVD player except the DVD player is built into an integrated system with built-in amplifiers for the 5.1 channels. A stand-alone DVD player needs to be connected to an A/V receiver or amp+preamp via either analog 5.1 audio inputs or coax/optical digital inputs. Then your 5 main speakers (front right/left, center, rear right/left) and the .1 subwoofer will be connected to the receiver/amp+preamp.

A simple way to do is to buy a "Home Theater in a Box" system, which includes an A/V receiver and all needed speakers+subwoofer.

If you need more info, please post back m8. :)

Yeah I would agree the "Home Theatre in a box" solution may be your best bet.

However, if you don't mind spending a little bit more than the £200, you could get a cheap AV receiver (something like a Sony STRDE495 from Richer Sounds?) and speaker package e.g Tannoy FX 5.1 from Peter Tyson and you would have a nice little starter home cinema setup. You could prob do this for £270ish. I can personally vouch for the Tannoys as excellent value for money. Problem is, you start upping your budget! ;)

The advantage of this over the all-in-one solution is that it will almost certainly have more inputs so you can wire your Sky box, Xbox, DVD player, Video etc through the amp and have lovely sounds from all :)

The advantage of the all-in-one is that you get a nice DVD player as well, and a decent system may have a few inputs.

To get 5.1 from your Xbox, you need the AV kit (about £12) and connect the digital out from xbox to digital in on your AV receiver. The sound is frighteningly good, believe me. You will wonder why you didn't do it sooner
