Asked alot, answered alot. One size is metric, one size is binary.

To explain the matter more precisely, there are 2 different systems to express HDD storage capacity: the decimal system (1 Kilobyte = 10^3 bytes = 1,000 bytes) and the binary system (1 Kbyte = 2^10 bytes = 1,024 bytes). Therefore, in decimal system, 1 Gigabyte = 10^9 bytes = 1,000,000,000 bytes whereas, in binary system, 1 Gbyte = 2^30 bytes = 1,073,741,824 bytes. The OS looks at the HDD in a binary way and clearly, for marketing purposes, the HDD makers use decimal system to make the numbers "look" bigger :) . Your HDD is OK m8. You're not losing anybyte.

here is a pretty long, boring description of it:

Is fitting the H.D in a lap top similar to fitting in a P.C? ie formatting & reloading of windows? Mike.
