This question comes up quite frequently so here's a run through . Hopefully Hoss will approve & load this into the FAQ folder http://www.cdrom-guide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

As this is aimed at those who don't have a lot of experience with installing hardware I'll try to keep it geek speak free.

IDE
The typical PC will support 4 IDE devices such as Harddrives, internal ZIP drives, Burners, CDROMS & DVD players. There are 2 IDE 'channels' called Primary & Secondary and each channel can support 2 devices called the Master and Slave. IDE devices are connected to the motherboard by a flat (usually grey) ribbon cable which has a thin coloured stripe down one edge (usually red or orange). This stripe indicates which edge of the cable corresponds with Pin 1 on the motherboard & IDE Device.
Usually the main Hard drive is set as the Primary Master, the Burner as the Secondary Master and the CDROM either the Primary or Secondary Slave.

Jumpers
The jumper settings control whether an IDE device is set to Master or Slave. On the back of the drive will be a 6 small metal pins in 2 rows and 3 columns. connecting 1 pair of pins will be a plastic coated metal bridge. These pairs control whether the device is Master, Slave or Cable Select.
(Some Motherboards support cable select but most don't so I wouldn't recommend using this setting). You will need to refer to the manual for each device to determine which pair of pins does what.

settings
Plextor recommend that their burners be set up as the Secondary Master with the CDROM as Secondary Slave, other manufacturers prefer the CDROM to be the Primary Slave.
If two devices are to share the one cable there MUST be 1 Master & 1 Slave, so set up the Burner & CDROMs jumpers accordingly.

Installation
1) Back up your system settings, important files, ISP & Dial up settings and bookmarks etc. If you happen to fry something you don't want to lose all this important info.

Now power down the PC and remove the Case. Ground yourself on the case, even a small amount of static electricity can fry components. Using a static strap is a good idea.
Find a free 5 1/4 drive bay & pop off the plastic cover, also removing the metal backing plate if there's one there.
Slide the burner in & fix it in place with screws.
The IDE cable from your Hard drive will show you where the Primary IDE connector is on your motherboard. Connect an IDE cable to the Secondary IDE connector making sure that the coloured stripe is on the same side as the Primary cable's. This is to ensure you install the cable the right way. Check the burner manual/installation sheet to see where it's Pin 1 is located & line up the coloured stripe. Forcing the cable in the wrong way on either end can do some serious damage, even frying you brand new burner so take care!.

Attach the CDROM to either the primary or secondary cable (see above). If you only have single connector IDE cables then you will need to buy some dual connector ones, they don't cost very much.

Slap the case back on & power up that mean lean burnin machine. If you're on Win98 or later the PC will say something along the lines of "Well bugger me there's another CDROM drive here, well how about that?"
If you're still living with Win95 then you will need to go into the hardware manager (in the control panel) and add the burner.
If you're using Linux - well you must be a geek boy so what are you doing reading this FAQ?.

OK Hardware's in let's burn!! - not so fast there's more work to be done.

Software
You're burner probably came with Adaptec Easy CD creator or Nero so load it up.
There's a little secret they don't tell you, you need an ASPI layer to fool these proggys into thinking your IDE burner is a SCSI device. The best ASPI application I've found is here (http://www.welcome.to/cloneclinic)in the files section, get check ASPI & Force ASPI.
Force ASPI will install a standard ASPI layer on a machine that either has never had an ASPI layer before or has an old or proprietory one installed. Check ASPI tells you what version (if any) is on your system.
Oh for those who don't like all those big words here's a version full of nice pictures http://www.cdrom-guide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif , thanks Hoss. How to Hook Up your IDE CD-Writer, by Yaa (http://www.cyrus.troy.btinternet.co.uk/yaa1.htm)

Postscript for Plexy Owners
For Burnproof to work on the 121032 you need to enable the DMA setting on the burner. To do this go into Device Manager, expand the CDROM list and right click on the Plextor.
In properties , check the DMA box and Uncheck AIN (Auto Insert Notification), Do the same on the CDROM.
Reboot the PC and you're ready to rock 'n roll
