How do I make the icon text to have a background color like black on windows xp pro? my background is making me have trouble reading the type.
Are you referring to the desktop icons ?, if so right click on the desktop and select "properties" then select "appearance", there you can change several appearance settings.
If these aren't the icons you're referring to let us know, someone will probably be able to help.

Do you mean to say Transparent Icons or...?
In windows XP, open Control Panel => System Properties => Advanced tab => Performance Settings => Visual Effects => tick where it says Use Drop Shadows for Icon Labels on the Desktop. Now click OK button and reboot the machine.
