I am thinking about getting an av receiver. To start living the dream of a home cinema. I am probably going to go for a low/mid range second hand yamaha av receiver (still looking around at speakers). I normally watch xvids etc through my xbox and was wondering have people got this sort of setup and whats the sound quality like on xvids through the surround sound setup?? (i understand that most xvids etc arent encode in 5.1 (but some are) and the av receiver would need to be in some type of forced surround mode, if i am wrong even better ;) )
cheers

XviD is a video codec. It has nothing to do with audio. With a PC AC3Filter, ffdshow, nvidia motherboards, etc. can encode to AC3 on the fly so that you can use S/PDIF out with any source, eg. mp3, aac, vorbis, etc. If using a suitably high bitrate you shouldn't be able to notice any quality loss (AC3 is a lossy format).

cheers for the celtic, much as i had expected ie it depends on what audio codec you use and what bitrate etc you set the audio codec at.
