How Do I Make / Capture A .Gif Animation From A Video?

You could use mplayer with -vo gif89a. mplayer can play just about every video format/codec. Needs to be compiled with libgif and not libungif if you want compressed gif output. Otherwise there are numerous animated gif producting programs, some of which will take certain video formats as input. Generally these will give you more control when it comes to optimising the output.
