new to XB scene - need a few Q's answered

hi, thanks for looking in

ok im not too X-Box literate, i dont even own one.

my mate has an X-Box with a samsung DVD drive, about 6 months ago the laser/box packed up and wouldnt read legitimate discs at all, ok maybe after trying 20-30 times but would you class that as working :)

he has offered me it as i said i might be able to get it flashed and the rest.

what i need to know is:

do i need ANY form of disc (using the better/modern/reliable mods) to use that particular mod??

if not would it be difficult/expensive to fic and/or replace the laser as thats the obvious thought of where the defect is.

You can get a whole new drive for about $80 that would just be taking out 2 cables and 3 screws once the top is off

If you are good at taking stuff apart you can get just the laser assembly for about $40 and replace it

To mod it you can do it for free if you have the right equipment with the lttols 1.75 or 1.8 memory card save you just have to get it to your memory card
USb action replay max would make it pretty easy to do this

You can get it from xbins do a search and there is a post on how to do this

i dont really fancy replacing the laser or drive, just wanted a cheap hassle free xbox

You can buy a new Philips or Thompson off ebay for about $30.
