The new Sony that comes out Nov 15 with component inputs & 160 gig HD is the best. But its $800 US.

panasonic are the main sellers for dvd recorders very well made and allso can get parts
for them
keep away from any non branded type as these will not get repaired at all when it
goes faulty
sony are good too
but my money first would be panasonic

keep well away from phillips to many design problems and firmware problems

personally i would never go with a panasonic dvd recorder
all 3 we've got/had have had problems with the disc getting stuck (not from recording, from playing!) and in one case its been so bad it had to be sent away to panasonic to get repaired.
If theres a slight fault or scratch on the disc, it goes into an endless loop of trying to eject it but it never does....im terrifies to watch anything on it to be honest.
And this is 3 different models too, so no bad model or anything (first one was dvd only, 2nd was the original one with HD, and the latest one is the new HD one with SD slot, dont know any model numbers)

Id go for the LiteOn 5006 - records on + and - r AND cdr (vcd and svcd) and its only £175 - bargain - im getting one soon as I can afford it

Bought the liteon 5005 before xmas, fine recording on all formats, until you want to watch the movie on a different player, got five different players, one is the play anything yamada and none of them will play the disc back apart from the liteon it was recorded on, it will be going back to argos tommorrow.

Panny or Pioneer would be my choice.

I had a similar problem with my Lite-on LVW-5005.
I switched from Ritek G04 DVD-R to a generic TEON 8X DVD+R brand disk.
For some reason, the +R media burnt in the 5005 produce a DVD that is more compatable with other DVD players. Now all the DVDs I make will play in every DVD player I've tried: Toshiba, Daewoo, Magnavox,Apex, and my portable DVD player.

I only use a -R disk if I don't plan on sharing.
