What spec PC do you recommend for burning DVDs?
Building a PC for a customer who wants to be able to burn dvds in the background while surfing the net and doing a few other bits and pieces without slowing down...
Got 2 x 200gig drives going in
and 1 gig of mem
Any other recommendations?

Well if he's planning on burning DVD's OTF I would not recommend it, I never even burn DVD's from HD images and multitasking after several coasters even when burning @ 4X.
Most important would be the quality of the reader and writer really, best reader IMHO would be a LiteOn 166/7 and writer Pioneer 108 or NEC 3500a.
Would be best to be running a cpu of minimum of 2500+ too but all said and done if he's doing a lot of DVD encoding/burning a seperate system for this is the most sensible way to go. :)

I have to agree with Lazza, while I agree that there are a number of things you can do to help reduce the risk of coasters while multi-tasking, the fact of the matter is that the whole process is still pretty consuming on your PC's resources. As mentioned above if he really decides his time is that valuable then he might want to consider building two PCs.

Why not suggest a seperate 1:1 Duplicator ... these are dead cheap now.

Well as long as you fire up your browser or Word before starting the burn process that would put the risk of a coaster down quite a bit, starting them up whilst burning and then watching the buffers drain down to zero can age you somewhat. :D
