www.advancedmp3players.co.uk are a pretty good for that type of thing- i think its free delivery too
Here's (http://www.advancedmp3players.co.uk/shopping/pages/mp3players1grid.html) all the usb flash disk (as opposed to ipod style hard disk based) players they do.
Using Ipod's reasoning of 4mb average song- you got about 2 albums on a 128mb player, double (obviously :D) for a 256mb- spend a little more (closer to £200) and you can get that mini-ipod which is 4gb

You might want to check out a creative nomad xtra zen 30gb. I just got one and I like it better than my friends ipod as it has a few nice features like the ability to edit a playlist while playing music which I don't think the ipod can do.
Plus its probably around £100 cheaper than a 30gb ipod.

ebay is full of ipod listings, if u get lucky u might be able to snag one up for a low price, just make sure the ipod isnt too old because their batteries tend to lose their charge over time.

Try and save money and get the iPod. The new ones are really something, with blacklit display and 40 GB of available space. I got the iRiver and it is pretty good. Lots of firmware updates and a lot of functionality. I would say get an mp3 player that will fit your needs. If you have a lot of mp3 cds, then an mp3 cd player is your best bet. If you like a fast and easy "music where you go". then you can get a flash mp3 player. But if you would like to carry your whole collection with you at all times, then go for the hard drive players. Over all, I think that the cd mp3 players have done well.

doubt it- cheapest solution would be to do it on the pc (for the audio books anway) and re-encode and bung it back on the player.
try the apple refurb store (http://promo.euro.apple.com/promo/refurb/uk/) open on wednesdays (open at 10am) only - get there early- i never see any decent deals when i check on my lunch break
maybe able to pick up a cheapo refurb- but there are few alternatives i guess- including the creative zen- the iriver 20gb'er looks good too- although no idea what it is actually like
surely your kid doesn't know 10,000 songs yet? :D
also advancedmp3players also have hd players here (http://www.advancedmp3players.co.uk/shopping/pages/mp3players3grid.html)

I think i saw this function on one of the iriver mp3 players, not sure which one, just crusing all over their website, it was either a hdd player or mp3/cd.

Iriver user and it's the dogs. I've claimed many times in the past it's way superior to the pod and I stand by that 100%. I've owned a large selection of players including Zen and Pod. Zen was nice but menu a bit of a chore and if I had to be critical a bit bulky, still better than the pod for audio quality though. Iriver trumps em all for features etc though. Expensive but ultimately if you're serious about sound and you want a player that does the lot.... it wins hands down

sony network walkman isnt too great for features or functionality but the are two reasons why i got it
1. its tiny, hangs round ur neck, u wont even feel its there
2. its a really smart looking palyer (i agree that its also a taste thing, some ppl probably find it ugly but not me)

A great array of players (that sony looks really stylish).
The iriver selection of upcoming players is stunning both in looks and features http://www.irivernordic.com/products.php?prid=15 .
The Rio Karma has many great features too.
my kid is now totally spoilt for choice.
on the kids box there are over 11,000 mp3.
So far my kids "selection order" (subject to change at whim :) ) is
1/ Iriver iFP 800
2/ iPod
3/ Rio karma/Sony
All I have to do now is find one of the above at a competitive price in the UK.
