Need help with Windows Updates...

Can any one help me with this?

About once a week (usually on a Friday), I install a 'Ghost' backup. This Ghost image was created just after a fresh install of Windows XP Pro and SP2 (plus all the necessary drivers of course for other devices).

Every time I install this backup image, I have to download and install any necessary Windows Updates all over again.

My question is, is there any way I can download the updates and store them on my spare hard drive so that I can install them after installing the Ghost backup image?

On the Windows Update site, there's a button that says 'install'. I can't download the updates and install them myself.

How do you guys do it? Please let me know.

I dotn think you can permanently store windows updates unless you download them manually.

Why not take 2 images one of the fresh install then one after all patches have been applied. I like to refresh once in a while but once a week there shouldnt be a need for back up that often by all means but no need to restore if nothings gone wrong.

Hi, you should find them in your Temp Internet Files. Before downloading the updates, clear your temp int files so that it becomes easier to locate them. --OR--

Open the Windows Update page.
Select Windows Update Catalog.
If it's not there, open Personalize Windows Update, check "Display the link to the Windows Update Catalog under See Also," and click the Save Settings button.
The Windows Update Catalog will give you access to all the updates.
Select "Find updates for Microsoft Windows operating systems," then choose Windows XP version as the Operating System, a language, and click on Search.
Select Critical Updates and Service Packs.
Add each upgrade you want, then go to the download basket.
Type, or press the browse button to locate a place on your Hard drive to download the updates into.
You will be able to download the upgrades and burn them to a CD.

Hi Guys, :wavey:

Thanks for the replies….

To UK_Trader,

That's what I'm trying to do - download them manually. On the M$ update site there only a button to 'install'. I can't see one (like there use to be) to download.

I restore once a week because during the week I install and uninstall lots of different programs. I usually loose between 300 - 500Mb of disk space per week. Due to the fact that when you uninstall a program, lots of files are left behind. Not to mention the registry.

To Mastermind,

Thanks for that. But I can't even find 'Windows Update Catalogue'. Am I going to the right site? This is where I've ended up:-

Let me know.
