Got to files (Joey episode 1 and 2) one will play the other will not! I know this is a codec issue as I can play them both in my chipped Xbox, but the PC can not display episode 1 (sound is OK but a black blocky picture) What is going on!!!
Codec 4CC xvid
Name Xvid
Anyone help?
Cheers

If they are both XviD then they should both play. What build/version of XviD do you have installed and is it actually being used to decode?

I'm at work now but i'll have a look when i get home - how do i find out what is been used to decode?

Any decent player should give you access to the filters being used. Otherwise I guess just render it in graphedit or GSpot and see what filter is loaded.

I'm still at work but I'm sure Gspot says 'Codec 4CC xvid' for both files. Which is why I can't understand that one plays and the other does not?

Well a really old version of say ffdshow could be being used and one could be a really old XviD encode and the other a recent one with ASP features enabled. What bitstream versions does GSpot report? Really old XviD versions won't even have one. Anything recent if I recall correctly is XviD0034 or was it 36? Ok recent encodes so they probably use recent builds on both however one could use say qpel, bframes, etc. and the other not.

OK below are my codecs according to Gspot am I missing any 'major' decoders? One of the films I can't watch is 'man on fire' with this been a new film I’m assuming its encoded with a recent codec, gspot simply states codec Xvid? This is driving me crazy!
Thanks for the help so far!

You don't appear to have XviD installed. Also in GSpot to the left it reports a bitstream version, this basically tells you what version of XviD was used to encode. Future versions will have a table mapping bitstream versions to actual codec versions/dates.
Anyway, my advice would be to install a recent version of XviD, v1.0.2, a cvs build or a cvs head built. Easiest is probably just to download one from Koepi. You could grab one of my builds, but then the download would be much slower.
I guess on your system either DivX or 3ivX is handling XviD decoding.
