was wondering if there is any restricition on the length a system link cable can be (crossover network cable can be used right?) as his bro has one upstairs and hes downstairs so would have to be 10-15m

yup thats fine- often take xbox downstairs and stream stuff from pc in my room- everything's through a router but the cable from the pc to the router is 15m and the router to the connection in the living room is another 2~3m and i get no probs.
If you can't find a long xover cable- you can get a long standard cable and one of those little junction boxes- and a small x-over cable.

I can't remember the exact limit of CAT5 cable but I think it's somewhere in the region of 35-40 meters (Could be wrong though).
