ok, i recently got a new home entertainment setup and i am having a problem trying to find a way to hook up my cable to my 5.1 speakers. i know its possible because some shows i watsh say dolby surround sound. the cable line that comes out of the wall is just a regular coax cable that goes directly into the tv. from the tv i have an s video cord going to the dvd player, from the dvd player i have a small coax audio cable going to the reciever and going into the reciever i have the optical cord from the ps2 and the stereo L and R cords from the pc. Is there any way i can do this?
thx

My understanding is Dolby surround sound is only 2 channels, with a hidden rear channel mixed in. The receiver decodes the hidden channel. Don’t think cable is true 5.1 yet (although Sky + has an optical output I believe and therefore certain movies are true 5.1). You should be able to connect the cable box directly to the Receiver via standard phono leads or via the TV for Dolby surround sound?
Only my understanding, and I by no means an expert!

Oops sorry then, my set up has a seperate cable box and the TV has an audio output (standard hi-fi leads). Maybe try an AV forum?

How can you not have a cable box?? how do you change channels??

Cox stopped using cable boxes along time ago they only use them for older tvs now cause all newer tvs have a remote and a coax connector in the back. we just use the remote and the coax line comes from the wall. i will try to call them today and ask them. I cant use the vcr cause i want surround sound when a show or movie has it is on. my vcr only has mono inputs
Dolby Surround is not 5.1. Its L/R Center - mono rear. So u can get by either two phono's from your tv into your amp, if u havn't got phono output try getting a 3.5 jack to two phone lead and use your headphone socket as your output.

5.1 is six channles of sound no you can either have 6 cables coming from a device to an av reciever or a coax or a fiber optic cable. you can not get 5.1 suround from sterio you only dolby prologic which means that when you plug a sterio phono in to an av reciever the reciver try's to adapt the signal into the speakers which it thinks are correct. generall rule of thumb voice centre speaker, obvious sterio mix pans of left and right speaker and generall atmospherics in the rear speaker's. ie if you whatch eastenders say from a sterio source you'll have peggy mitchall from the centre, the pool table on the left, the dart board sound on the right and music and genral pub chitchat and sound's from the rear speakers and front left and right. i hope this help's sorry about the spelling.
