Xbox Frequently Asked Questions
originally posted by the3jams

Here is a small FAQ to get us started. We will edit this list as more news and info is made available.

Q. Can we copy our original Xbox games?
A. Yes you can, however you will need to network your Xbox with your PC. Here is a guide to show you how.
http://www.xbox-scene.com/articles/evoguide3.php

Q. Do I need a modchip or is there a boot disc available?
A. You will need a modchip. There are a few being developed, which one is best is still unknown at this time. There is no boot disc available, if you see any on the web they are most likely fake.

Q. Will the Xbox backups be selfbooting?
A. Yes, as long as you have a mod chip they will boot directly. There is no other way to boot Xbox backups.

Q. What media can I use with my backups?
A. From the specs of most chips it appears as though all media types will be supported (CD-R,CD-RW, DVD-R, DVD-RW). However it is said that only certain types of CD-R will work.

Q. What format are these Xbox releases I see on the internet?
A. They are usually .ISO images.

Q. What program should I burn these ISO images with?
A. You can burn them with any burning software that supports this image type using the settings of Mode1/2048. Nero, CDRWin, EZCD, Primo, and many others support this image type.

Q. Is there any other programs I will need if I'm a newbie?
A. You will need a program to uncompress your files. WinRAR is recommended, however any program that supports the RAR format will do.

Q. I have files that I need to compile to CD either from a backup I ripped, an emulator, etc. How do I do this?
A. Use the following tutorial: How to compile Xbox discs with Prassi Primo written by Cal_G_UK

Q. Where can I find out how to swap my DVD-ROM in my Xbox?
A. Use this tutorial from xbox-scene.com (http://www.xbox-scene.com/articles/dvddrive.php)

As stated above we will add more info as it is made available.

I put together this Newsgroup tutorial for those of you that want to get Xbox Iso's. Yes there are other ways of getting these ISO's like FTP, HTTP, Kazza, Mirc etc, but if you have a high speed connection and a little patience this is for you. I couldn't think of using anything else but newsgroups for any type of app, games etc.

This tutorial was done rather quick and I am sure I have made some mistakes so please correct me if you see anything wrong. The basics are here to get you started but if anyone has any questions I will help out. I will be editing this post if I find something new or if something has changed.

Section I (Choosing a Usenet Provider):

The first thing you will need is a news server. You may already have one that is included with you ISP. (Contact them to find out.) The news server will look something like this: nntp.we.mediaone.net or gsra-woodland.tampabay.rr.com.

If your ISP doesn't have a reliable news server then you will need to subscribe to one. EasyNews (http://www.easynews.com/) is a good news server.

Section II (Download a Newsreader)

Everyone has there preference when it comes to newsreader but I personally like Forte Agent (http://www.forteinc.com/). Other good ones are Xnews (http://xnews.3dnews.net/), Grabit (http://www.shemes.com/grabit/) or Newsbin (http://www.newsbin.com/). If you want to start out with a real simple newsreader with not as many features as the ones above, try Newsshark (http://www.wmhsoft.com/NewsShark/).

Section III (Setting Up You Newsreader)

I will be using Forte Agent as an example here.

First and most important thing is get yourself a copy of Prassi Primo DVD, this can be found in many places on the net including newsgroups, file sharing programes e.t.c. Sorry I can not give you a direct link.

Place all the files you wish to burn (and nothing else) in a folder on your PC hard drive, I use C:\xbox

Launch Prassi Primo DVD, click file, new job, data disk.

You will be presented with a new interface to the right of the screen. move the mouse over the folder icon near the top of the screen it should say "Add Folder", click this and browse to C:\xbox, select this folder and click ok.

The folder C:\xbox should now be shown as \xbox\*.* under the heading "Folder or File as on Disk" double click \xbox\*.* and a new window will open titled "Modify Destination on Disk"

The bottom left button \ (root) should now be pressed so that the destination changes from \xbox\*.* to \*.* click ok to close the window and confirm change.

The folder path now on screen should be updated to that of \*.* if not recheck everything above to make sure no mistakes have been made.

Next highlight and click the icon 6 to the right of "Add Folder" which is titled "Recording Options" you will be presented with new screen titled "Data Job Options" select the following under "CD"

Recording Type = Disk at Once (DOA), Closed
Mode = Mode 1
File System Type = UDF - Up to 128 in filename lenght, any char., plus 8+3 tree (Bridge)

Click ok to confirm selection.

At the left of the main window you will see a drive selection screen, left click on the drive you wish to use (CDRW, DVD-R/RW e.t.c) and press "F8" to confirm selection of the drive, if done correctly a red arrow will appear pointing to the left.

Select desired recording speed and hit the red circle near the top for the writing process to begin. When the writing is finished pop your newly created disk into the Xbox and enjoy.

***** Addition/Relates to Beta patching for Multi Game ****

Multi Game (patching for games that would not work previously)

Submitted by dcsurfer

(basically using Beta patching for games so it works on compliations)

about multi game dvd-r's
well, yesterday i started a post about games that dont work on multi game dvd-r, as it turns out all games will work on multi game dvd-r (atleast so far). even games that gave me a damaged disk error now work. how you ask? well i am glad you asked... i did some searching on the board and was reading about "beta patching". now just an FYI here... i use a homebrew 2.4 which isint beta. however, i figured what the hey and tried some beta patching... low and behold it works on every game so far... i even put 4 games that refused to work (from various attempts/compilations) on the same disk and every one of them worked like a charm. now there was an exception to the standard beta patch procedure. moto gp riot release... offset 214 was different it was like 0702 or some such... also just next to that was ffff ffff. i changed 214 to ffff ff00 and the ffff ffff to ffff ff00. now even that game works .

Ive noticed that their is no real simple guide on connecting the xbox to your pc although their are guides on other sites they dont make it clear or simple enough for those that just want to do games and put games on the HD so here is a dead simple working guide for everyone,

Im assuming that you own an xbox that is capable of playing backups and has evolution x installed.

Right first off you need to go get yourself a network card any will do, you can get them for £2 at computer fairs or pc world has them in for £10.

Then you need to get a CROSSOVER CABLE, i use a belkin one its yellow 2 metres long and its only £7 at pc world.

Then install the network card in your pc.

Now here is the bit that most people seem to have questions about.
Go into evox (if you are running it from your xbox HD or a cd) and go to settings, then move down to Use Static IP and make sure it says YES, then go to IP, and make it 192.168.0.2, then go to Default Gateway and make it 192.168.0.1, then save and exit.

Now go to your PC go to control panel then network connections, now double click on netwok connection now in the box that has appeared highlight the TCP/IP bit and click properties, it says "OBTAIN AN IP ADDRESS AUTOMATICALLY" and "USE THE FOLLOWING IP ADDRESS" tick "USE THE FOLOWING IP ADDRESS" then in the box that says IP address type in 192.168.0.1 then go the SUBNETMASK box and make sure it says 255.255.255.0, then click OK.

Now you have got your pc and you xbox ready to go ALMOST, what you need now is a program called FLASHFXP you can get it in a free 30 day trial format which you will find if you search for it in GOOGLE, then once you have FLASHFXP install it on your PC.

Now take the CROSSOVER CABLE you bought and plug one end into your xbox,s ethernet port on the back, then plug the other into your network card, now start your pc up (if you have any firewalls or anything like that turn them off completely) now switch your xbox on (no disc in the xbox) you will now have a connection between your PC and your XBOX.

Now open up FLASHFXP go over to the little orange lightening symbol and click it then click on QUICK CONNECT now you get a box, in the SERVER OR URL box type in 192.168.0.2 then in the USER NAME box type xbox, then in the PASSWORD box type xbox, now make sure the box that says PORT has got 21 in it, then click on CONNECT you will then see a bunch of folders apear in the right hand side window and in the bottom right hand side window it will tell you the connection info now you are inside your xbox YAY.

This is the simplest way to do this if you are just looking to edit menus or copy games stuff like that.

DEAD SIMPLE.

Hope this helps.

I understand that someone will say "but if they have evox on their HD they have already connected to their xbox" NO alot of people buy it all ready done and anyway if you are running it from a cd you can still use my guide

If you'd like to know what DVDrom drive you have in your Xbox, here's a brief description to tell you:

Samsung Drive: two small circular holes in the tray opposite of each other.

Thompson Drive: no small circular holes but in this tray the inner disc holder of the tray is somewhat thick in diameter.

Philips Drive: looks similar to the Thompson drive although the inner disc holder of the tray is thinner in diameter.

This is a guide to using samba share which is one of the streaming protocols used for several Apps and Emulators. This is not a diss at Relax or XNS, but I find that if one does the job and doesn't require any additional software to be installed on the PC side, then others aren't required- so please no flames

Samba requires that the stuff you want to stream has to be in shareable folders so before I start I'll set out the PC requirements and settings.

To share a folder on your PC (I'm going to explain it for XP- I'm not sure if it is any different for 98 or ME/2000) right click a folder containing stuff you want to share/stream and select "Properties". Choose Sharing and then tick the "Share this Folder on the Network". You are then given the option of changing the share name from what it's called on the PC- that bit's up to you. Either way, you will need to note what that name is (the one that appears in the "Shared Name" box).

The other things you will need to know are your pc's "Name" and the "WorkGroup" it belongs to (to find both of these out, right click "My Computer", choose properties and select the "Computer Name" Tab- The "Name" is the what xp calls the "full computer name" (without the . at the end), the Workgroup should be fairly evident).

Some apps will also require the "Username"- easiest way to find this out is to get up the task manager and check the users tab and see which one is active

For these examples I'm going to use the following Values
Workgroup- Home
Computer- My-Computer
Username- User

You may also need to know the IP address- I'll use 192.168.0.1 for the pc's ip: Haven't come across an app that handles IP's only- and because I'm using DHCP I use the computer name rather than IP because the computer name is far less likely to change whereas the IP may change

The share names for the folders I'm going to share and a brief description of them are:
Movies- Movies on My-Computer
Pics- Pictures on My-Computer
Music- Music on My-Computer
Games- Games (that I have the originals for) on My-Computer- which contains different rom directories and an Xbox folder
DVD- DVD-Rom Drive on My-Computer (XP will give you a warning when you try and share a Root Directory- Just Ignore it-you can't delete things on a rom drive anyway)

These folders can have further subdirectories- unless you actively prevent subdirectories being shared.

If you decide for whatever reason to password protect these shared folders then also note the Usernames and passwords
for the different folders- I personally don't bother, no xbox apps actually ask you for the password- they are in the samba path and therefore don't prevent anyone using your xbox accessing those folders- there is currently no way that I know of, for asking for the pass word when you try to connect.

There are several Apps and Emus that support this but not all of them use exactly the same syntax. I'll do them one by one.

XBMC

In this example I'll use a music share so scroll down the xboxmediacenter.xml and find the " <!-- my music shares !-->" line and below that look for the bit in the xml that looks like this:

Find this excerpt

<bookmark>
<name>SMB</name>
<!-- you can use the following formats: !-->
<!-- smb://domain;user: password@ip/share/directory/ !-->
<!-- smb://user: password@ip/share/ !-->
<!-- if guest/public access is enabled: !-->
<!-- smb://ip/ !-->
<path>smb://DOMAIN;username: pwd@MyWindowsServer/movies/</path>
</bookmark>
With no username & password you can use the following:

<bookmark>
<name>Music on My computer</name>
<path>smb://My-Computer/Music</path>
</bookmark>
It's that simple :eek: Other ways to enable the share can be done as listed in the example above- but this is the simplest and works for me

Now some people are having problems with playing cd's cos they haven't got a Samsung drive- well remember how I made the DVD-Rom drive shared? Well this is why:

<bookmark>
<name>DVD-Rom Drive on PC</name>
<path>smb://My-Computer/DVD</path>
</bookmark>
IT will give you access to the pc's DVD drive. So now you can play all those avi's you burned on cd and vcd and svcd's from your pc drive. The only draw back is that xbmc can be made to autolaunch vcd's svcd's and audio cd's when inserted in the xbox drive- but as XBMC treats the PC drive over samba as a "folder" you will manually have to open up the dat files in a vcd-find the MPEGAV folder in the vcd and select the one or more dat files- if there are more than one dat files you can use the "stack" option on the left hand side of the file browser to make them play sequentially without stopping.

I would paste the DVD-ROM samba share in all of the different media menus (e.g. My videos, My music) because XBMC has preset cache levels that are different for Pics (low), Music (medium) and Video (high)- if you only do it in My pictures and then try and open avi, the video may not playback or may be very jerky.

Note that the name of the bookmark doesn't have to be SMB, it can be what ever you want- probably best to mention the fact its on the PC somewhere in the name- but the icon for a streamed folder is different to an xbox hd folder.

You can have as many samba shares as you want. I have 3 for videos, 3 for music and 2 for pics- one of each is a PC-
DVD-Rom drive

XBMP

The samba protocol is slightly different in XBMP (XBMC has since update to a later version of samba). Make the required edits in the config.xml file.

This is what a samba share of the Movie folder on my pc would look like:

<share>
<name>Movies on My Computer</name>
<url>smb://Home/My-Computer/Movies</url>
<cachesize>8192</cachesize>
</share>
Notice in this you have to also use the Workgroup you are using, and you specify the cachesize used as well (defaults are 8192 for movies, 256 for pictures and music). This what the default XBMP set up for a Video share looks like

<share>
<name>Network (SMB)</name>
<url>smb://username: password@workgroup/computer/share</url>
<cachesize>8192</cachesize>
</share>
Again you can add your PC DVD-rom using

smb://Home/My-Computer/DVD
Like XBMC you can have as many samba shares as you want.

Emulators

The following emulators have samba support- Xboy Advance, Neo Genesis, and PSX (that I know of). Although PSX does support it I wouldn't recommend it unless playing very small or basic games- as it can't seem to stream fast enough. But I haven't tried many games to back that statement up.

The samba entires need to be made in the .ini file in the emulator's folder

They all only have provision for one samba share- so it's up to you whether you want that to be the PC-DVD-rom drive or a folder on the pc to share from

find the line in the .ini file that begins with "smbshare" and replace it with:

smbshare=SMB://My-Computer/Games
As you can see they all use the XBMC samba address style

Complex Tools

This is the whole of the ComplexTools.xml

<ComplexTools>
<main>
<nameserver>192.168.2.1</nameserver>

<eripdir>E:\HDDLoader\</eripdir> // E partition to rip/launch/uninstall
<fripdir>F:\HDDLoader\</fripdir> // F partition to rip/launch/uninstall
<gripdir>G:\HDDLoader\</gripdir> // G partition to rip/launch/uninstall

// Samba Share for Unrar/Uniso releases over your network
<smbdir1>smb://My-Compute/Games/</smbdir1>

// Path where your MP3/MOD/XM/IT/S3M/OGG media lives

<MediaDir>F:\Music\Transformers</MediaDir>

// 1 = Media patch xbe's 0 = Don't patch
<PatchXBE>0</PatchXBE>
</main>
</ComplexTools>
As you can see it uses the same samba address system as XBMC. I thought I could be a smart-arse and fool complex tools into having the eripdir and fripdir to point to other directories in the F drive, and to use a smbdir2 for say where I have my xbox apps saved on my PC but it would have none of that.

Complex tools can unrar files- so say you have a rarred up iso (it can be multiple rar's too) in the GAME folder on your pc- you can open and unrar it straight to your xbox game drive- in this case any of the valid ripdir's (If you don't have a g drive then you won't be able to select it).

If you have a rar (not zip unfortunately- use Unleash or Avalaunch for zip files) on the xbox hd you can also use complex tools to unrar it but it will always unrar to one of the three ripdir's unfortunately

There's also provision for background music but unlike Avalaunch it only can play from the one folder- no provision for sub directories.

DVD2Xbox
This also has samba support supposedly, but I can't for the life of me get it to work.

The only feature samba share is used for is to rip an xbox game straight from the xbox dvd rom to the shared folder on your pc, although I guess it'd be quicker to do it through qwix and avalaunch anyway.

PC Tweaks

I mentioned in Complex tools and in the Emulators you were only ever able to use single samba shares- well you can if you really want you can create "special folders which serve as links to the contents of another folder" using the this program (http://www.pearlmagik.com/winbolic/).

You basically create a virtual folder that houses two or more separate folders- e.g. for the Emulators maybe a C:\Roms and D: (DVD-rom drive). It's your call, I personally don't bother- but would be interested to hear how well it works

And the final thing:

Some people especially in XBMC may find that when they try to stream video (in particular) from their PC, they are having problems reading the file, the video is jerky, or doesn't load at all. Now that could be a codec issue or it could be due to the fact that XP's Network buffer size on your pc is low so check out this link (http://www.tweakxp.com/tweak1557.aspx) to see how you can fix it.

Hope you guys find this helpful :D

Sorry If its a bit wordy

The question:

1. How do I make a multi-disc?
2. How do I put games to the hard drive of my Xbox?

Answer provided by nimbles:

Question 1: Get yourself a program called craxtion (http://www.craxtion.com)

Question 2:

To copy from a DVD (original or backup)- Get a Program called dvd2xbox (latest version is 0.5.8), sorry it's an xdk compiled binary and therefore illegal and against forum rules to post or tell you where to get em - just the word xbins you may have some more luck at say www.xbox-scene.com
To copy a game iso which you have somehow got on your pc :rolleyes: use a program called Qwix (http://www.teamavalaunch.com/qwix/)

Change the boot logo from Xbox

Hey chaps- finally got this working- seeing as i pretty much only now use my xbox for XBMC, i started trying to replace the XBox Logo for XBMC.

Logo Replacement is now possible with the FTT program, so it was just a matter of creating a valid direct x file (xbmc-real.x in the zip file).

Anyway the xbmc-real.x file and a dodgy handcam recording of how the boot up looks like + tutorial on how to do it can be found here (http://www.geocities.com/xbdvdrg/xbmc/boot.htm) (the bios you have to get your self)

If you've never flashed a bios before or only have a single bank tsop/modchip i wouldn't recommend it unless you know what you are doing, but a couple of people over at xbox-scene have done it along with my self (mainly using x2 4981.x) and there are no probs with the tool

If you want to make your own (text based) logo's then a tutorial on how to do that should be in the FTT download

If you want to make an existing logo (e.g. not text based) into a .x file then its a little bit more work but i can give you a hand if you want (though my 3dsmax and deepexplorer knowledge are limited to what i learned in the last 4 days :D )

How to copy a disk using boxexplorer

Boxexplorer is a filemanager for xbox, it is fairly tiresome to use,
till you get used to it, and it does have drawbacks , i.e.
Long filnames and does not patch!.

MAKE SURE YOUR DISK IS CLEAN, AND YOU HAVE
ENOUGH DISK SPACE IN THE REQUIRED LOCATION
BEFORE STARTING THIS TUTORIAL!!!

Insert the disk you wish to copy into the xbox dvd drive,
and start Boxexplorer.

When boxexplorer starts up it will load to the screen shown below :-

Understand that this program has "source and destination" screen indicated
by the large "A" or "B" in the top right hand corner of the
screen. You can switch
between these screens by pressing the Left or Right trigger.
"A" = Source = "Left trigger"
"B" = Destination = "Right trigger"

For this tutorial, make sure that when boxexplorer loads, you are on the
"A"
screen.

Pressing the "white button on the joypad will bring up the Menu.
Highlight "select drive" and press "A" :-

simple tutorial for creating True XISO`s (xbox iso images)

This is also useful for repairing/fixing bad images (possible corruption)

Also another very very good reason to create true xisos is because, say you back up an original you own (by ftp`ing it over from your xbox to pc, then burning it to disk as say a data dvd), this method will work, but i know myself, and others have pointed out that you may notice your drive making a lot of noise, this is because the structure of the disk is not optimized for the xbox. More noise = more strain and wear and tear on your drive, also it takes the xbox longer to read the disc.

So good practise to creat true XISO`s

In this tutorial i`m gonna extract a problem iso release which is having problems, and then create a true xiso. but its simple to just creat an xiso out of a folder containing your freshly ftp`ed files from an original you wish to backup ;) goto step

Download simple xiso

Here : http://dwl.xbox-scene.com/~xbox/xbox-scene/tools/isotools/SimpleXISOv03.zip (rightclick save as)

Extract and start it up, you first screen will be :-

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v251/thecheekymonkey/xbox%20tutorials/simplexiso/1.gif

Click on "establish shell extensions" this will enable "right click" options under windows.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v251/thecheekymonkey/xbox%20tutorials/simplexiso/2-2.gif

Now select and right click on the ISO you wish to extract.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v251/thecheekymonkey/xbox%20tutorials/simplexiso/2.gif

Click "extract to `NAME_OF_YOUR_ISO.ISO/"
this will extract the iso to a folder named after your iso

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v251/thecheekymonkey/xbox%20tutorials/simplexiso/2.gif

thecheekymonkey

It will then start to extract it :-

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v251/thecheekymonkey/xbox%20tutorials/simplexiso/3.gif

And once completed :-

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v251/thecheekymonkey/xbox%20tutorials/simplexiso/4.gif

Now its time to move your original ISO to another folder, or delete it if you wish (i`d move it to another folder, as it will get overwritten in the next couple of steps)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v251/thecheekymonkey/xbox%20tutorials/simplexiso/5.gif

**********
For anyone who has just backed up an original from there xbox via FTP start from this point

Now right click on the folder that its just extracted the contents of your old ISO to and select make "NAME_OF_YOUR_ISO.ISO" (it will take the name from the name of the folder youve clicked on)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v251/thecheekymonkey/xbox%20tutorials/simplexiso/6.gif

thecheekymonkey
04-30-2005, 06:24 PM
Once completed :-

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v251/thecheekymonkey/xbox%20tutorials/simplexiso/4.gif

Your now left with a true xbox iso image file, optimised for the xboxs dvd drive.

Just burn using your favourite prog (i use dvd decrypter)

Good luck all ;)
