From doom:

This is certainly going to re-spark the old DVD- Vs DVD+ discussion: 4x DVD-RWs will not be compatible with existing drives (http://news.com.com/2100-1041-5174034.html) that support burning of DVD-RWs up to 2x speed (the latest 8x/4x DVD-R/W drives are not affected though). It could even be that DVD-R discs are also affected (8x DVD-Rs are yet to become available), which is part of an ongoing controversy between the DVD- and the DVD+ camp.

Hmmm.... guess no burning of 4x DVD-RW's on my 105

It's not like the RW formats have the greatest compatibility anyways. I almost never use them. I have tried several brands of DVD-RWs and they don't work on anything outside of my PC. *EDIT* Oh yeah and they are wrong on the 8x part. Pioneer (Taiyo Yuden) has 8x DVD-R media out now, check out www.meritline.com (http://www.meritline.com). Also with new burners being cheaper and the 8x4all firmware on the 107/A07, it really doesn't matter. That firmware alone is pushing the 107/A07 in sales. ;)

we need a drooling smiley, well anyway the 8x4all firmware is sweet.(insert drooling smilie)

It doesn'y do anything with RW media, but -R format on ritek and you get a disc in 8 minutes. I could kiss the developer for that. I find Rw very useful as a test disc, my xbox picks them up, helps reduce coasters on expensive media. This + vs - will slowly diminish as the dual format drives are becoming the majority of production, the winner will be in the media sales. Which I think -R will win.

I've read this report before. I detected a distinct pro-plus bias in it, and it seems the reporter may have a hidden agenda when he is trying to spread the muck to 8x -R media in much the same way as the same source tried to imply that 4x -R media was incompatible with earlier writers -- this turned out to be fixable easily via a firmware update.

I suspect that the 4x -RW problem may be the same as the 4x -R issue -- namely that the write strategies preburned on the stamper are in a slightly different format for 4x than 2x, causing problems for older writers but easily fixed with a firmware update. I might be wrong of course.

There's a reason that almost 100% of the discs used by the bootleggers are -R, maximum compatabillity for their 'customers'.

That and I love it when people use cheap media (ie Princo, Khypermedia, Memorex) DVD-R and then compare it to Fujifilm or Verbatim DVD+R which costs 50-60 cents a disc more.

Although not familiar with +R it is important to use a disc indentifier. In -R's Verbatim does use some CMC (as well as TY, MBI, MMC and Ritek) as do some Memorex. You are right that there are some very rabid Memorex users out there, but they could be discs from various makers. CMC get's some very bad reviews, yet the CMC Philip's seem to held in high regard.

I'm a matte silver Ritek (RIDATA on the hub) user. Either G03's or G04's have performed great for me. I've no need to go chasing stores, coupons, brands and rebates to save a dime. There is whole 'Grade A' thing going though, and the Verbatim G03's do have cleaner edges, but I've had no problems with the 'bumpier' plain matte finish ones I buy online.
