i am trying to set up a wireless network and i think i need windows service pack 2 so that i can just run the wizard to get it to work.

anyway, i have downloaded it and it says invalid product key or something. i got my pc with it preinstalled.

so what do I do????
is there any other way around this?

That indicates your OS is not legit. Contact the person from where you got this machine. He must have installed a "copy".

Purchase a legit key from Microsoft.

The only reason I have put that in bold is so that people don't think they can 'obtain' a key by any other means.

If your mate did actually buy XP from E-Bay (Something I would never do for this exact reason), then he needs to contact the seller and report him / her.

I was under the impression, falsely so it seems now, that unlike SP1 there were no keys blocked by SP2 except the infamous FCKGW key maybe.

As above though, buy a legit key and problem solved.

I have seen this happen with "cracked" copies .... i.e. those where the activation folder has been removed on Home Edition, but the Corporate Pro edition is OK.

As to the original post ..... you know what you need to do.

I was under the same impression as Lazza.
If your mate purchased this through Ebay, he/she needs to report the seller to Ebay as Memphis mentioned earlier. It's very apparent that they were taken in. Other than that, there's nothing you can do other than purchasing a new license.

i got hold of a utils disc with sp1 and sp2 on it.
my code is still the famous FCKGW, after installing sp1, i can get auto updates and support.
think it all depends on what your chucking at it, reckon i was just lucky.
next format ill buy the latest xp pro disc, saves all the grief, and its legit.
best way i spose, just hurts on the day eh.

suckslugs, take this as a friendly warning... At any time you could be "next" on the hit-list. ;)

noted.
do microsoft really bother, and can they actually use data theyve collected from your pc, as they can with data youve knowingly submitted.
seem to remember some kind of message from m/soft when trying to download sp1, saying they cant.
i'm pretty clean here now anyway, long since retired
