I re-installed windows XP pro the other day and backed everything up on to my D:\ drive (160Gb), when I put stuff back in My Documents, about 40% of it is corrupted and cannot be read. Now anything I download from FTP sites or bit torrent on to that drive are also corrupted (usually when in RAR files which is mainly what I download). When I unrar something that's about 40-50 rar files then there's usually 1 or 2 that are faulty, if I re-download then it's usually a different rar file that's corrupted.

Any idea's?
is my HD on its way out?
will chkdisk make any difference?

Did you install either SP1A or SP2 with/after your reinstall ?
If not it could be that XP is having trouble with accsesing a drive greater than 137gb and data loss.

my windows comes with SP1, I tried to install SP2 but it messed up half way through and uninstalled

I had no problems with this drive before reinstalling so I don't see what the problem is (Same version of Windows installed before)

Looks simple but still... try changing your HDD data cable.

Please don't run any diag utility on that drive as it will destroy the data beyond any limit.

tried that, also tried putting the HD in another PC but didn't work

ended up doing a quick format then used a recovery util and got everything back

cheers for all the responses
