I have an xvid movie with a seperate subs folder. I have no probs watching the movie on my pc...but i want to lend it to a friend who only has a standalone player. Is there a way of patching the subs on to the movie or something similar?

let me know

Josh

If they are vubsubs then you will need to OCR them to say srt, then just burn to the disc with the avi (assuming it is an AVI). Also possible to use mp4 with some ESS based players however as I understand it still no proper mp4 sub support, not even Nero Digital subtitles.

If it is an ESS based player then you need to select the subtitles from the file menu before playing. Mine (MTK based) you just press the subtitle button during playback to scroll through, like on a DVD.

OCR = Optical Character recognition. Yes, you have to type it in, but only once (in theory) for each letter. After that it knows that a = a, etc.

1 last question. If i am converting the avi to dvd, how to i get the subs on the movie?

Two ways. Render the subs over the video. This way they are part of the video and can't be removed/turned off. Second way, author the subs as a seperate stream. To do that you need to convert from what you have to something that your authoring app supports.

ok so the film is avi and the subs are srt. what progs do i use so that eventually i can convert the video to dvd in nero express

For NVE just make sure that you have auto direct vobsub installed. NVE converts via dshow (as I understand it), so if the file playsback with subtitles (as it should with dvobsub installed) then it will also convert with subs. This is the only way with NVE as it doesn't support authoring subtitle streams.

So,

when i add video files to be converted do i add the .srt file also?

sorry for all the questions...u have been a great help

No.

ok,

so its as simple as encoding the video and vobsub will autodetect the subs and start streaming them with the encoding video?

Should do, same as when you play the file back. Other option with NVE is to use the vobsub AVISynth plugin and then MakeAVIs on the script, using the resulting fake avi as the source.
