1, How small a HDD can i get away with...
2, just an idea...but if i replace my dvd-rom with a dvd-rw in the xbox has anyone written any burning s.ware for the xbox yet? You could then use it as standalone dvd copier:) read into HDD burn back out....I know it won;t read originals but would be handy to back up your backups...

1. the original is 10GB
2. That would be nice but dont think it could be done easily I
know that if you run linux that you can use it as a regular linux pc pretty much however I dont think that using the dvdr as a writer will work I think only 2 off the shelf drives if I am not mistaken will work in the xbox (not for sure on this one)
Also those drives will no longer read regular games unless you hack it also So I doubt that you will ever be able to do the stand alone burner thing with it

One thing to consider is just buying a larger HD and saving them to the xbox and playing them to your hearts content and then ftp them to a pc with a dvd-r later if you want a disk :bouncing:

I was thinking about using a flash ram as a hdd for size reasons...just thinking of a challenging new project wondered if anyone had done the burner thing with the xbox yet...

It's impossible to do, flashram memory could be used as an alternate memory card with some hacking but as your primary drive it is unconceivable. The xbox needs atleast 3 gigs of space to boot.

The dvdrw drive would have to be modified extensily. In order for the two models of samsung pc drives to work in an xbox the drive's frimware must be flashed with the xbox firmware and the the drives motor must be removed from the drive and installed backwards.

You would need firmware compatible with the dvdrw drive made by M$ or revised from the original M$ code, then you will still need some sort of burning software made specifically for xbox consoles. If your savy with C# or C++ you can try to make it with the XDK(xbox development kit) but the firmware is an impossible hack IMHO.
