When windows starts behaving instable or runs into errors, due to newly installed sortware, changes in settings etc, there is always the possibility of restoring the older settings by system recovery.

What i was wondering... would it be possible to perform a fresh install on a system, and then burn a recovery file to a cd, so a clean recovery is safely stored?

Ghost is my pick but you may need a DVD or multiple cds, or if you're using XP you could set up a restore point immediately after install there are heaps of alternative backup programs it is just a matter of finding one you like that works.

Nope, a System Recovery checkpoint wouldn't contain a copy of every Windows file. System Restore only accumulates and tracks the changes to the system and system files.

Use a program like Ghost or Drive Image to make a backup image of your entire harddrive.

Are you sure it only tracks changes to system files I thought if you used restore it would undo all changes, I agree it won't save a copy of all your files but if it rolls back the changes right back to the install I thought you would be left with a new install depending on how well system restore works (of which I am not sure as I have never used it).

Sorry you are right after a quick bit of research

You wont regret it it is one of the most competent utilities I have come across. It does what it should with minimal effort and is extremely reliable
