How do I mute the boot tone?

I've an emac running OSX and want to mute/lower the volume of the bootup tone immediately after I switch it on.
Is there a way to do this as it's on full volume at the moment and really annoying.

The only way that I know of is to turn the volume all the way down each time before you start the computer up

You can also insert a headphone jack into the headphone socket. This would be usefull if you forget to turn the volume off before you shutdown like I always do.
