Hey guys,
I got an apple chip installed in my ps2 a year and a half ago. If I remember correctly it played ps1 originals and backups when I first got it. I recently got the urge to play some old games and I can't get it to boot those backups. Original ps1 and ps2 games work fine and so do ps2 backups when I just tap reset. Tapping or holding reset won't boot the ps1 backups. The discs are in good condition and they are good quality media. Any suggestions? Could I be doing something wrong? Might a solder point on the chip have come loose causing this single problem? That seems unlikely by my limited knowledge of mod chips, but you'd know better than me. Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks,

What media did you put the PS1 backups on? Like DVD Media, Cheap CD-Rs can rapidly degrade over a short period of time. It could also be a laser issue of some sort. Anyways my recommendation would be to try making a backup of another PS1 game using quality media (ie Tiayo Yuden/Fujifilms MADE IN JAPAN).

I tried copying an original that works onto a new Memorex, but it didn't work. My media varies from non-branded to Memorex and TDK and even some HK silvers. I don't think it's a laser problem because my Jet Motto backup on pretty cheap media reads as an audio cd and audio cdrs work. Perhaps I should have mentioned that before. Since it can play the audio tracks fine I assume the problem is in recognition of the disc as a ps1 game. This is why I posted my problem in the chip help section. When I put in any ps1 backup besides Jet Motto and tap reset the system goes to the browser screen but only shows the memory cards, no disc. Holding reset gives a DRE as expected for 'off' mode. I'm very confused.

Few other things to try
Try holding down reset for about 8 seconds
Since you tried different media you might want to try cleaning your laser or checking your wires see if one of those helps

Try This:

Switch PS2 ON
Open PS2 tray
Switch OFF PS2 (rear switch)
Put PS1 game in tray
Switch PS2 ON
HOLD Reset until the blue light stops blinking

For a chip that was sold to me on the premise that it would "boot anything 1st try", it sure has taken some experimentation to get PS1 games to work!! Once you get the hang of it, it is a pretty reliable chip, just takes some practice. Good Luck! RS

Thanks for the suggestion Rippleslayer. I've been too busy to open it up to clean the laser and check the wires. If neither of these options work I think I may just replace my dying ps1 or get a new modchip in my ps2. Thanks to all who've helped.
