read this in a magazine today
bt launches capped broadband
basic service is capped at 1gb per month for a subscription fee of £20
if a user downloads more then 1gb in a month they will be charged £4 extra up to 3gb and another £4 if they exceed that.
the extra charges commence in the summer
also the service cannot be shared between multiple computers over a network
for anyone thinking of going with bt broadband in the future

How can you stop it being shared with another computer?

perhaps they'll limit you to registering only one Mac Address. Of course this doesnt stop Mac Addys being cloned through a router.

I think they only give warnings for the first 6 months.
However you have to buy their modem and pay connection.
A comparable set up from pipex is cheaper over the 12 months and you do not have any caps...

NTl tried their cap, but havn't heard of anyone getting disconnected though.
I reckon this is just the start, as the telecoms are going to lose a lot of money when more people start using systems such as 'telediscount'. we have to call iceland regularly , and the BT/NTL price is 55p/min, onetel is 19p/min, but telediscount is 1p/min.. everything is going over the net, so in future, if the big players don't charge per GB or MB, they'll go under, or not make enough to improve the infrastructure.
I fear our days of fixed rate broadband are numbered ( or at least at the present cost )..

I dunno ellal, the price seems to be coming down. However I think the telco's are trying to encourage people who don't spend all day dl'ing but just use it for browsing. This uses minimal bandwidth, so they get more for their money.
Also, I'm sure they will be 'encouraging' those who go over the cap to take up one of their more expensive uncapped schemes!

As emailrob said, it's just to attract new customers at a cheaper price who are not super leechers like us lot.;) loads of providers are starting to do these cheaper pay as you go deals now..even right now you're only supposed to leech 1gb a day on bt's 1mb £41 service, but trust me they don't say a word! most days i download 8-9gb, so i think i would have had a warning by now.:insane:
