i have a 2.5" hard disk in a external usb case (not sure of exact name lol)

but the disk is making like a scratching noise, not all the time just every so often for example when im copy files, so am I just hearing these noises just because im close to the hard disk and it’s just the hard disk spinning or is it that the disk is on the way out/damaged??

scratching noises are usually a problem with the head/heads.

personally back it up, coz it's on it's way out. try doing a full defrag or use the disk manufacturers tool to test it.

Yes it's going down. Initially it makes that scratching sound and then the ticking part starts. As said by Fuego, backup as early as possible. Usually ext. disks are covered with 3 yrs warranty. Check the documentation or visit the manufacturer's web site.
