Not really a how can I d/load question, but just a how can I download here at uni and not have them moan?

On a super fast connection and they say they dont want you to use P2P programs, fair enough as I never do. Just wondering if it is possible to d/load from FTPs and not have them complain or cut off my access?

Strange this is they didnt say I couldnt watch porno on the web :D

Cheers guys

read the terms and conditions of the internet access at your uni, and if it doesn't say about it, then you should be fine.

of course, as per many uni's, they may have blocked the ports used for ftp etc.

Yep, read the T's and C's or just simply ask them. They will probably have some kind of monitoring on each port and IP on the network so that they can see if one person is downloading more than they should.

Likelyhood is, you will be able to download from FTP's, but it will likely be fully monitored and may even have a limit on download. Just bear in mind that they are providing net access as a tool to help your study. I'm not saying you can't download, but don't try and bend the rules if they say you can't.

Yup, I think it very much depends on your institution. I downloaded hundreds of songs and apps on my departmental pc while I was doing postgrad and never had a problem. That said, a friend at another uni was busted for downloading some legit freeware that he needed for his research :)

Find out what you can as suggested above, and / or dip your toe in the water and see how many pirhana you come up with!
