Hi is there a free programme that will change a film encoded with divx 5 into xvid?

Just change the fourCC from DX50 to XVID. What is the point though? The XviD decoder handles the fourCC DX50 anyway. Could also remux to mp4. With mp4 all video is just mp4v, whether it be encoded by DivX, XviD, quicktime, 3ivX, libavcodec or whatever. XviD decoder also handles mp4v.

Thanks but could you explain what fourCC from DX50 to XVID means i`m pretty new to all this and the reason i want to change format is i have a dedicated xvid player and it seems to struggle to play divx encoded films:)

Dedicated XviD player? Never heard of that, only heard of DivX players with limited XviD support.

The fourCC is how whatever opening the file knows what decoder to use. Certain XviD releases (such as Koepi's) come with a fourCC changer, just open the file, change the fourCC and resave. If it uses bframes then you might also want to check out MPEG4 modifyer to unpack then as this maybe the problem. Unless I guess if you are using packed bitstream in your XviD encodes to.

Are we talking AVI's here or does this player support other containers? Because when muxing DivX to mp4 via 3ivX's muxer packed bitstream is automatically unpacked and fourCC's are no longer an issue.

Its a Kiss player it plays Xvid no probs But will only play a few Divx files the ones i want to watch are very choppy and the player freezes i`ve tried opening the files with nic`s fourcc changer but won`t open the file and yes the files are .avi.

Try running the files through AVIMuxGUI or VirtualDubMod.

Well I guess Kiss players do use Sigma Designs chipsets and they did steal XviD's source code. Generally these players are DivX certified, etc. with hardly a mention of XviD. Never heard of one described as a dedicated xvid player anyway.

Sounds like packed bitstream and more than 1 consecutive bframe on a MTK based player. Try MPEG4 modifier and if it is (>1 bf &pb), then unpack it and try it again.

If it is something else, then you still don't have to convert to DivX. If setup correctly XviD should be every bit as compatible.
