Coming soon to a store near you. I said the internal drive would be about £130. It's £128! As far as I know the Pioneer equivalent - A09 is not slotted for release until the end of 2004. Why wait till then, Sony are as good as Pioneer.

Availability and Pricing
The new drives are expected to start shipping by the end of the second quarter at an estimated selling price of $230 (£128) for the internal DRU-700A and $330 (£182) for the external DRX-700UL.

Ok so who going to be the first???:blockhd:
I would think before you spend any money!!!
You don't want to be like the people who got the 8x plextor drive, we know how good they are. But they can say they where the first to buy an 8x drive!! :saywhat: :insane: Well I can say I spent almost half the price and got a better drive. Thats what I like say. Just my two cents or we can wait for the update to the A06. :insane:

I would give you a link to what people are laughing about and who but I think that would be against the rules. But if you look in the old world and if the search still works the name of the post was Pioneer A06 Dual-layered compatible !!!.:laugh::laugh:
The sarch does still work and I bet hes still waiting for the update. :clown::laugh:

Actually according to CDFreaks, Pioneer is supposed to have a dual-layered burner out in the Summer sometime. The only thing that makes me hesitant on the Sony is that it is + format for DL. Unless they have made some compatibility improvements, I don't want a + format only DL burner. As mentioned above, I would also prefer to wait and let them work out the bugs. Even though it is DVD based it is still new technology and there are bound to be firmware/media issues. Also we don't know anything about writing speeds. We don't know how long 2.4x or 2x is going to take for a full dual-layered disc. Unless I am missing something it will take 45 minutes to 1 hour to burn and the media will probably be quite expensive for about the first year or so. Notahacker is correct, it is never wise to buy into technology when it is brand new. ;)

Quite right. When the media becomes cheap, from a few Taiwanese manufacturers, chances are the early drives won't touch them. It'll be a good long while before cheap DL discs become available (in fact I'd be surprised if they were <$5 this year) and even when they are, the early drives will undoubtably be so picky that the budget media won't work.

And given Sony's reputation when it comes to picky drives, avoid like the old bargepole would be my recommendation!!!

Didn't sony say that they weren't going to make and DVD Burners? That they would just be rebadging drives from Lite-On?

Last I heard, that's what they said. They were leaving the optical drive manufacturing to Lite-On.

What's also interesting is that Lite-On has now changed their new model numbers from LDW to SOHW as in the SOHW-812S. Could this be Sony Optical Hardware?

So basically u will be able to get any dvd that is less than 8 gig and do a full backup and watch on ur dvd player

Are the media still going to be dvd-r or dvd+R.

Actually the capacity is 8.4GB. Anyways the Sony and Philips drives will be +R and the Pioneer coming out later is supposed to be -R.
