Word document refuses to open

I have a 10MB word doucment that for some reason suddenly refuses to open.
When attempting to open from explorer, i get a message telling me the file or pathname is invalid, and i should check permissions for file or disk access, or open the file from the "open" option in the Word User Interface.

Both file and disk access are just fine. When attempting to open from the "open" option in the UI, i'm prompted the file needs conversion (???), that eventually fails.

Copy that big file to another folder. Set your explorer to view all files. Double click the .DOC to open. In the background let Word continues to throw the errors on you. You will notice another file has been created in the same folder starting with ~ sign. Now copy this ~*.doc file to some other location and close M$ Word.

Rename this ~ file with anything.doc and then try to open it. Should work fine.

One more point... Is it that the original file is password protected for making changes to it? If yes then disable the password. You may set it for opening but not for the modifications.
