Who manufactures TEAC DVD+-RW drives? Also are they good or are they crap? I am thinking of getting one of those (It is very cheap.....$75) but it is an open box item, so I cannot return it. It appears that somebody tried to open the box inside the store, and only got half-way to it....lol. But it still qualifies as open box. There is also a Buslink, and a IOMagic drive for a good price (open boxes too - $82 each) All the drives have similar specs. They are all 8X4X12 DVD+-R/RW and the bufffers are all 2MB. What are the differences in quality burns. I need them to burn game backups of Xbox and PS2, and of course DVD movies (I have kids, and we all know what they do to originals.) I also know that PS2 and DVD movies are no problem for most any DVD burner, but I hear about some issues with Xbox. I already own a Memorex 4X DVD+-RW burner (which is a Pioneer A06 clone) and I am VERY happy with it, but the price is really great for these three that I am asking about for a second burner in my other PC. Thanks for any opinions on these.

The Teac should be a Pioneer.

Didn't they have some weird firmware issue though?

Yes I think they did but I'm sure on newer drives you can flash them with the Pioneer firmware ....... I think.

I seem to remember that the older TEACS (twins to the 105s) had issues with any software other than Nero. Not sure about the newer ones and as Lazza mentioned you probably could upgrade to the Pioneer firmware and get it sorted out. I guess they are kind like the OEM Sony burners (have to flash the firmware before they will function like thier retail counterparts).

AIUI the latest TEAC 8x drives are made by LiteOn, or at least some of them are -- I think they're branding Pioneers still as well.

I have a TEAC 105 (can't remember the TEAC model no) and it seems to work with everything btw.

The DV-W58E was possibly manufacturered by NEC. TEAC has had a few manufacturers, NEC, Pioneer and Lite-On, depending on the model.
Here is a drive manufacturer (engine) database....................
