I was successful in obtaining the files i wanted from a particular newsgroup but i now realise that some of the files are missing. is this a common issue with newsgroups? Can i post a request on the news server to see if i can obtain the required files and how do i go about doing so?
Any help would be great i am using Grabit news reader
Weather or not missing or incomplete files are a regular thing depends on the news server, most ISPs news servers will have a lot of missing or incomplete files, a premium server will have very few missing or incomplete files, these days many people post par or par2 files with the posted file set so look for these, they can be used to rebuild any missing or incomplete files, you can request a repost of the missing files but only do this if there are no par or par2 files in the set, look through the group that you're downloading from and you may see other requests for missing files, in most groups there will often be someone willing to help but remember no one owes you anything so be polite and just accept it if you don't get what you want.
Having said all of that if you use news groups regularly then the best option is to subscribe to a premium server, the cost is reasonably small and the advantages are great, there are a few premium servers but the only one I have experience of is Easynews (www.easynews.com) where you can get a three day free trial if you wish, I'm sure other members here will tell you of more premium servers that they have experience of.

switched to claranet last night.
downloaded both star ocean and onimusha 3 for ps2 and when extracting iso files were either missing or the files were corrupt :(

clara tend to be ok in general, but you may have to use par files to repair, as suggested above. if none available, then either wait for report or request fills.
otherwise use someone like newshosting for a "good" unlimited provider or easynews/giga etc for premium

ok another bit of help needed
I have found the star ocean game i wanted. I downloaded everything avaliable including the PAR2 files
I have run the parfiles to fix the situation however it recognises that 7 files are missing...i though that PAR files fixed the missing links...
can anyone help me i am using Quick Par
cheers
Josh
If you have enough par2 blocks they will rebuild the missing files, Quickpar should tell you how many blocks you need, check the par2 files that you've downloaded to see if there's enough (the figure after the + sign is the number of blocks that the par2 file contains), if you have enough par2 blocks click repair in Quickpar, sometimes you may need to point Quickpar at the downloaded par2 files though this isn't usually necessary.
BTW : 7 missing files does sound a lot, depending on the size of the post there may not be enough par2 files posted to repair that many files.

Turns out i managed to find the missing files in another part of the binary group.
However, to continue this saga when extracting the iso it reaches 100% extraction and then an error comes up saying not enough disk space NTFS does not support files over 4GB even though i have 160gb free space. I then press cancel and it continues extracting, stating 9 hours till completion time can anyone help me?

does the error actually say that?
usually this is an issue is your drive is formatted as FAT32, rather than NTFS as the error indicates.
your drive will need to be formatted as ntfs to get any joy with dvds.

Yeah, you need a NTSF drive cause yours won't accept a file more than 4 gigs. Get XP or n2000.
