Hi I have a fair few Xvid films which play fine on my P4 2.6ghz PC but when I try and play them back on my 700mhz PC which is connected to my TV they play back too fast and the audio sounds all high pitched. Some are ok but some are not, can anyone recommend a program or codec to fix this, it's very annoying since the only reason I got the 700mhz machince out was to playback xvids/divxs on the tele.

If you are just using it for that you might want to try running Linux. That said I can't say that has ever happened to me, what player, filters? Specs on the file, audio stream, etc.

I have tried using the official Divx codec, the Xvid codec, the all in 1 codec pack with ffdshow and a few different players. I don't have a copy of Linux, is that the OS that is free? If not I could try XP Pro (got Win98SE on it at the moment).

It's weird because if the computer was too slow you would think it would lag not play faster than normal.

Just having a codec installed doesn't necessarily mean it is being used. DShow works on a priority system, the filter with the highest priority gets used in the graph. All in one codec packs tend to screw things up and for the size of the download you could have got some versions of Linux. First thing I would try is VLC or mplayer as they don't rely on installed codecs. Both are available for win32.

For Linux you might want to check out: http://www.geexbox.org/en/index.html

Sorted now, I figured out that all the xvids that weren't playing properly had mp3 audio, so all I have to do is change the audio in virtualdubmod and they play fine.

Cheers for telling me about that geexbox, great piece of software, much better than going into windows to play films.

 geexbox- i thought it was something similar to XBMC

read the first line * Switch MPlayer to 1.0pre5 and i thought- 'wait a minute the xbmc devs have just done that too'- which got me further confused

then actually did somereading
